15 week old projectile vomiting

My 15 week old has just projectile vomited straight after a feed. To give you an idea of the amount, I was soaked, including underwear, as was he and the pillow he was on.
He did it on Tuesday night but has been fine in between, feeding and sleeping well and seems alert and happy. Yesterday he did have 'projectile poo' out of the side of his nappy, not sure if this is related!
Apart from these 2 occasions, he's probably done it once or twice in the past, and never with this much force iirc.
Do I need to worry?

DD is 13 weeks and has done this a couple of times this week. Reliably informed by a friend who is also a doctor that it is most likely due to a growth spurt that her body hasn't caught up with. So she quite efficiently takes in as much food as she thinks she needs, her stomach cannot cope and it causes her to bring it back up quite forcibly! She also says that even if it looks like she's bringing it all back up, she will retain some of it and if she's happy and well with wet and dirty nappies it's just eyes bigger than belly syndrome and soon passes as the gut matures.

hth!

it is reassuring thanks.
Suppose I need to just keep an eye on it to make sure it isn't happening every time (well it's not like I wouldn't notice )

could it be reflux?

Katy44 · 09/08/2007 15:13

i suppose so, but would he suddenyl get that at 15 weeks?

Katy, has it happened after every feed since midday or has he kept some down? If it has been after every feed, I would ring your GP as you don't want DS to get dehydrated. Maybe he has a little bug? Offer him milk little and often to keep fluids up. Have you tried a little cooled boiled water in a cup or syringe to keep his water levels up? Hope he's ok.

Meeely2 · 09/08/2007 15:20

katy - dt1 had reflux and i used to DREAD every feed, i KNEW he would puke all over me (always missing himself). His was sudden, would feed fantastically then suddenly he would throw up at least 2 of his feeds a day.

Anyway, this may seem weird, but i got USED to it, as in i used to prep....bowl, towels at the ready. this made me relax and funnily enough he puked less (you know the scenario, take out a brolly it won't rain....prepare for sick and it won't happen).

Went to docs, got some infant gaviscon, added to his bottles and he gradually got better. He's always had a strong gag reflex though, so he is STILL way more pukey than his bro.

Meeely2 · 09/08/2007 15:23

is he fine in himself between feeds? DT1 would actually look relieved after puking and was fine and happy between feeds. he is a very sensitive boy, if they both get ill, he always gets it worse, plus he picks up on emotions....around the time he had reflus, dh and i were really not getting on and i was struggling to cope with boys and working FT.

Katy44 · 09/08/2007 15:23

He's only had the one feed at 2pm ish and he was sick after that although I think he probably did keep some down. Have called the health visitor and waiting for them to get back to me. I will offer a feed when he wakes up as I don't want him to get dehydrated. Haven't offered any water yet.
Meeely2, did your DS always do that, or did it come on as he got older?

Ring your GP just to be safe, you don't know what it is for sure...

Katy44 · 09/08/2007 15:24

Yes he seems fine, well after the last feed he was sick after about half an hour but he was smiley and alert between that.

my ds has reflux too, think it can be diagnosed at any time
gaviscon helped and as meely says you just get used to the extra washing.
As an experient put an oz of milk into a glass and pour it onto the ground outside. This will give you some idea of how much is being puked up and how much is staying down. You will be suprised how much mess 1oz makes

witchandchips · 09/08/2007 15:25

whatever you should go to the doctor

Meeely2 · 09/08/2007 15:33

katy, when he was older - racking my brains now, he wouold have been over 5 months (2.5 corrected, he was born at 29 weeks) as it was when he had started nursery. he got quite a name for himself, he was to blame for quite a few stains on the nursery carpet!

It stopped as quickly as it started - i mean it lasted a while but all of a sudden he wasn;t doing it anymore. We then went through a phase of him puking food with bits in when moving from pureed stuff to mashed stuff, so beware!

Katy44 · 09/08/2007 17:21

gastroenteritis was the docs verdict
Nothing they can do, just have to wait
feel really sick myself

Katy44 · 10/08/2007 08:32

Thanks
Well we both had it in the end, but hopefully we're both feeling better now. He hasn't been sick after a feed since (not jinxing anything).

definitely a bug then Katy. Hope you're feeling better today. Nasty, but a relief it isn't anything more serious in the end.
