This is IMPOSSIBLE and most likely a MISTAKE RIGHT?

I had blood tests at a drop in hospital today following a musco-skeletal appointment at a GP miles away. I literally went straight there with my form and waited for it - had it about 2pm.

They are checking for liver/renal/inflammation. The phlebotomists said results take 3-5 days.

I've just had a text saying my blood results are back and to make an appointment- it MUST be a mistake right?

No some results are available that quickly but not all.

Jesaminecollins · 09/09/2019 20:48

Try not to worry my blood result shows I have high inflammation in my body and I have it for about 10 years - it is because my thyroid is inflamed.

HeadintheiClouds · 09/09/2019 20:49

Slow day at the lab? It’s perfectly possible, if not usual. The longer suggested time frame is just about managing expectations in case of a backlog.
Best of luck 🍀

saraclara · 09/09/2019 20:52

Yep. They give a worst-case scenario time frame for results, just so they don't get people nagging them. Also it's Monday so there won't a backlog yet.

Mitebiteatnite · 09/09/2019 20:53

I had a blood test done while pregnant at 11.30am. I had a call from my GP with the results at just after 6pm informing me I was dangerously anaemic and to pick up a prescription for iron tablets immediately and start them as soon as I got home!

IME tests seem to be done fairly quickly, but only reported straight away if they're abnormal.

vjg13 · 09/09/2019 20:53

No, those results would be ready on the same day as your sample was taken. Some pathology blood results can take longer but not those.

AwkwardSquad · 09/09/2019 20:54

I’d say it’s possible. I had blood taken at GP surgery at 5.30pm once, and had the results by text at 8am the next morning.

LaurieFairyCake · 09/09/2019 20:54

It's literally 6 hours though. That's crazy.

My next appointment is 11pm this evening - online video appt.

I was hoping you were all going to say it was impossible so I could just go to bed Grin but it looks like I will make the appointment

I had a blood test in the morning and my GP called in the afternoon to tell me I had hypothyroidism and needed to come in for a prescription. NHS is highly efficient with test results.

Sunshine196 · 09/09/2019 21:31

My mum has a blood test today & got results back within 2 hours. Her next appointment is booked for tomorrow morning for more tests. When the nhs works it's absolutely bloody amazing. Hope you are okay

FixTheBone · 09/09/2019 21:36

As sunshine says. Routine pathology samples take about 2 hours once they've hit the analyser to be processed and validated.

ICantBelieveIDidThis · 09/09/2019 21:43

I worked a laboratory that processed blood tests.

First thing, it's more than possible.

The machines are primed, up and running, different machines run different tests and it takes no more than 45 minutes to run each test.

It's possible to have clotting, LFTs, FBCs, U&Es and WBC to be done within 2 hours.

Urgent samples can be 'queue jumped' and the results reported even more quickly.

JulietTango · 09/09/2019 21:47

Yes, I had blood taken at 12.30 and was in hospital by 2.30. This was 20 years ago too

Legoandloldolls · 09/09/2019 21:50

Well when I was pregnant they turned around my bloods in around a hour. I had pre eclampsia so twice daily blood tests.

DaveCoachesgavemetheclap · 09/09/2019 22:14

My mum had a blood test at the GPs one morning at 11 and had a call at around 5pm telling her to go straight to hospital as she was severely anaemic. We were really surprised by the speed of the results.

YesQueen · 09/09/2019 22:15

Definitely. I go to haematology and have my bloods done and they're back within the hour

MsJaneAusten · 09/09/2019 22:21

I’d be more confused by the 11pm video appointment. Like, FaceTime?

LaurieFairyCake · 09/09/2019 22:26

Yes, in London we have an app called Babylon GP at hand - so you can do video/phone appointments

My blood tests weren't urgent and there's lots of people saying theirs were turned around for really urgent/life threatening conditions

OP posts:
Flossie44 · 09/09/2019 22:28

Wow it’s amazing you have a video call..is it a real FaceTime type?? Fantastic.
I agree with others, the nhs can turn these results around really quickly when needed. Please let us know how you get on.
Good luck op Flowers

opinionatedfreak · 09/09/2019 23:05

If you went to the hospital phlebotomy clinic I'm not surprised.
Delay with GO bloods is usuallyctransit time to hospital.
As a hospital doc I start looking for routine blood results about 60-90mins after I've sent them.
Urgent bloods can be even quicker.

Depends on test though...some take time to do.

AwkwardSquad · 10/09/2019 08:38

Hope your appointment went ok and it’s nothing sinister, Laurie.

A bit late now, I know, but my blood test was entirely routine (one of those over-40 health checks) so the rapid turnaround isn’t just when it’s urgent.

AwkwardSquad · 10/09/2019 08:39

Delay with GO bloods is usuallyctransit time to hospital.

That makes sense in my case - the GP surgery is across the road from the hospital.

Frazzledbutcalm · 10/09/2019 09:21

How were the results OP?
