Cheap reading glasses

Does anyone wear these instead of buying prescription glasses from an optician? After watching DH spend hundreds on eye tests and glasses and still have problems with headachea, i have ignored the last two eye tests and haven't bothered getting any glasses. The one before my last test with Specsavers said i needed both vari and bi focals but didn't need driving glasses. I use a computer for work but never get headaches. The only time i get any eye issues is when using a phone and it makes my eyes water. The most recent test at the same place said I need reading glasses only but only if i wanted them. .a totally different result from the last one.
So i thought i'd see what cheap readers are like. I got a nice pair from the pound shop and they're really very good when on, but when i take them off and try to focus my vision is totally blurred! Does anyone else get this? Please tell me your eyesight stories!

It depends on your prescription, I can't get on with cheap readers because of astigmatism.
Lots of online places are very good, I like glasses direct. Or you could go asda they do varifocals for the same price as single vision lenses.

Home bargain and the pound shop have some I buy them for my mum

DottyGiraffe · 07/09/2019 20:38

A friend had eye surgery, cataracts, and the nurse said all the eye consultants recommend Poundland glasses and use them themselves.

Thanks for your replies everyone.

DottyGiraffe.. i can't believe it! That's .
V. interesting

I read that cheap glasses can cause issues as the lenses are often set incorrectly and if you have one eye weaker than another you need to go with your prescription.

@Homemadecommunistrussia.. i might check Glassesdirect.
Thanks

Primark ones are nicer than Poundland but a little more expensive at £2 or £3

lalaloopyhead · 07/09/2019 21:30

I've got a couple of cheap pairs from Primark and they are useful bit I find make my eyes tired and like you said OP cant see any thing when I take them off. I look awful in all glasses but decided to bite the bullet and get some prescription ones from Specsavers, only cost £19 so worth a go!

lljkk · 07/09/2019 21:33

I've used cheap readers for yrs. $1.06 from dollartree... I have some astoundingly expensive optician ones I use at work b/c of the better (longer) focal distance.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/09/2019 23:23

I use cheap (ish) over the counter reading glasses, but I've just got simple longsightedness as is common as you get older. Not Poundland or Primark, more like a tenner a pair. I wouldn't want to have to get prescription glasses as I keep a pair everywhere I need to read - bedroom, office, loo, kitchen, handbag . I don't have any problem when I take them off - like many 'readers' they're quite narrow so I quite often am looking over the top of them further off anyway.

NotWavingButMNing · 08/09/2019 12:45

I get a prescription from the optician and then buy online, usually from Glasses direct. I have never had a problem. They are a little more expensive than poundshop but I've had some lovely glasses for around £20. There are often good discounts on moneysavingexpert.

Thanks for the replies everyone Smile

@lalaloopyhead.. it would be good to know how you get on with your prescription glasses.. i'll try Specsavers or Glasses Direct i think.

I've just ordered some prescription ones from Specsavers - one pair was only £19 and the other £29.

mintich · 08/09/2019 19:49

Surgeons and consultants recommend poundland glasses for a temporary measure while your prescription calms down after surgery not as a permanent measure!
Honestly those specs are just magnifiers and unless they happen to match your measurements and prescription then you will just give yourself eye strain with prolonged use. Just get the cheapest from an actual opticians!

BooseysMom · 08/09/2019 19:59

@mintich.. Good advice thanks Smile

I can't mine from amazon. I try on a pair in the supermarket to find what "prescription" I need and then search on amazon. There's generally lots of choices of colours, styles etc.

I have lots of pairs because I'm always losing them or breaking them. Blush

GreenTulips · 09/09/2019 17:08

I get none in line as my eyes are different
I would use cheap glasses over a long period

You really need to go to an opticians/optometrist as chances are you will have a different prescription for each eye. When you have a proper eye test they are checking for all sorts of things like cataracts, nerve damage, diabetes, glycoma and brain tumours, a colleague of mine had no symptoms but thanks to a routine eye test a tumour was detected and she was on the operating table the next day!

BooseysMom · 09/09/2019 21:08

@rosie39forever.. thanks..sorry to hear about your friend. I've had the test done already. I just was interested to hear other experiences of glasses
