I burned my finger on the oven about 3 hrs ago. What can I do?

It's a tiny thin mark about 1cm long, and it hurts like hell. I've had it under running water, or sat in a mug of cold water ever since.

If the pain doesn't start easing soon, I won't be able to get to sleep. Is there anything I can put on it to stop it hurting so much?

PS Completely my fault - utter carelessness and stupidity of course

Do you have any ice? I burnt my thumb about a month ago, and ice helped. I wrapped a small icepack in a tea towel and held it for hours. Then went to bed, and it was much better the next morning.

Furball · 07/08/2007 22:43

cling film is good

RedLorryYellowLorry · 07/08/2007 22:43

Yes, put some ice or frozen peas in a tea towel and go to bed holding it. I burnt my hand on the cooker and had to do this. In the morning it was fine. Hurts like hell doesn't it.

babygrand · 07/08/2007 22:43

Don't put anything on it. You did the right thing with cold water and ice. NOt much else you can do.

MrsCarrot · 07/08/2007 22:45

or put ice in a bowl and keep your finger in it for as long as possible? When I had a really bad burn on the end of my finger I had to hang my arm over the end of a bed in a bowl! Lavendar oil is quite good too.

fransmom · 07/08/2007 22:45

certianly don't put anything like cream butter or such like on it. hiope you feel better soon.

hold your hand over and as close to the burn as you can and say "physician, heal thyself". it works sometimes for me.

if it still hurts in the morning, go see your a+e?

margoandjerry · 07/08/2007 22:46

make a paste of bicarb of soda and water and smear it on and leave it on.

really works.

puppydavies · 07/08/2007 22:50

is not much use to you now but for next time buy an aloe vera plant. you snap off one of t he fleshy leaves and squeeze out hte gel inside directly onto the burn. works for me when don't have time to run it under tap or keep in peas for as long as i know i should. is magic.

roisin · 07/08/2007 22:53

Oh thank you everybody. I'll go and dig something out of the freezer to take to bed with me

Makes a change from a hot water bottle, anyway.

Actually it is easing a bit now too.

Margoandjerry - my mum used to do that with the bircarb of soda. Does it really work?

honestly! It really works. No idea why. Almost feel like getting myself a burn so I can try it again

roisin · 07/08/2007 22:56

Don't do it! I'm sure it wouldn't be worth it!

not sure if someone's suggested this, but a cold teabag on it is MAGIC, works everytime for us

roisin · 08/08/2007 09:13

Thanks again everbody. I did the bicarb paste thing, which did ease it a bit.

I also zapped it with a tiny electric shock thingy, which is for insect bites - I presume it works on the gate theory of pain (like a TENS machine), as that hurts too!

Then took a paracetamol and went to bed with a bag of frozen veg! I got to sleep very quickly, and it just aches a bit this morning.

Roisin

Running cold water on it is very good. The important thing with burns it to keep them clean because they are easily infected. You can safely put antibiotic cream on the burn as a preventative...and there are some kinds that have pain relief. So long as you are not pregnant you should be able to safely take any over the counter pain reliever.

I hope that helps!!!

OOPS! I guess I should of read the entire thread....

roisin · 08/08/2007 10:04
