At what point do I go to the GP with what is basically a cold?

I've had a cold for about 10 days now. It has come and gone, so I'll feel fine for most of the day and then suddenly my nose is streaming, eyes itchy and watering etc. DH also has it, so I don't think it's hay fever or anything.

About 5 days ago I started feeling "chesty" and wheezy, fairly normal for a cold. But since then I've been having bouts of breathlessness, like it's really hard to take a breath.

I checked the NHS website and it says some breathlessness is normal with a chest infection, but it should clear up on its own. I'm a bit scared though, as the breathlessness has really been quite bad - feels like if it got much worse I'd have to go to hospital.

Is it worth going to the GP, or would I be wasting their time? I've had some bad chest infections over the years, but never been this breathless with them.

I've just had very similar and it's finally subsiding after about 4 weeks. I felt awful but not awful enough for it to be a chest infection iyswim. It's very unusual for me to get anything chesty so I did consider docs but didn't quite find the time, however I knew a few others with very similar symptoms so was pretty sure it was a nasty virus. No harm to go to docs but they will probably just say viral.

How are you ?

I didn't feel awful awful, but it wen't on for weeks and I had a heavy feeling in the lungs and it was a chest infection.

It started as viral, but developed on from the virus. It also sort of went away a bit, but then came back.

I'd have it checked out. I'm glad I did see someone.
