Am so fed up with wearing glasses, and am unable to wear contact lenses.

I'm sure there have been other threads on this, if you do a search. . .

Yes, I had it done in the US 4 yrs ago by a colleague of my ophthalmologist father. I am v. pleased with the results. I recommend it if you're a good candidate (some people, like my dh, are high risk) and if you can find someone good to do the procedure.

Yes there's definitely an old thread on this. I've had mine done, best money I've ever spent. Would only go to Moorfields though in case of complications.

I went to the Ultralase clinic in Leeds for an assessment a couple of years ago. I was armed with a great list of questions after doing research on the net (mainly horror stories from the US). I had saved the money and was willing to go ahead but was totally put off by the hard sell at the clinic. The woman who dealt with me wore a white coat but obviously didn't really know what she was talking about, and couldn't answer a lot of my questions e.g. how many operations the surgeon had already done. She then said if I signed up that day I would get a discount - at this point the image of a double-glazing salesman came to mind and I left.

I am still thinking of it - but being 37 I assume that I will be long-sighted anyway soon. It might be worth it for a few years of not fumbling about for glasses or faffing about with contact lenses. Would be interested to hear more stories.

My eldest DS had it done at Moorfields 2 years ago-expensive but worth every penny. No problems at all post-op and he is delighted with the result.

JoolsToo · 24/09/2004 00:02

A lot of the practitioners don't have it done themselves and one interviewed on tv said he wouldn't let his wife have it done! make what you will of that!

I suppose a lot of people are extremely happy with the results but things can and do go wrong - if you're one of the unlucky ones ........ is it a gamble you're prepared to take? not for me!

yes me!

I had it done at Ultralase in Tottenham Court Road 2 years ago, I was very short-sighted. It was one of the best things I ever done, I have perfect eyesight now.

The procedure itself a bit weird but not painful (would rather have it done again that a filling at the dentist). The effects are immediate (bit blurred the first night) but perfect the next day.

Thanks folks.

I am so fed up with wearing glasses. I MAY take the plunge as a Christmas present to myself!

keep us updated and let us know what you think if you do have it done! Thinking about it for myself but am chicken!

princesspeahead · 24/09/2004 23:34

I have a friend who is a senior registrar opthamologist at Moorfields, and who won't let her husband have laser surgery! She says that when it goes wrong it goes badly wrong, even when the best people are doing it (eg machines malfunctioning) and she thinks, on balance, that the risks are too high.

Scary, huh?

Ameriscot2004 · 25/09/2004 07:34

I had it done about 18 months ago and I've very pleased that I did. It took me months to get over the amazement at being able to see perfectly!

I was warned that I'd still need reading glasses in a few years time, but so far so good.

The only negative effect of Lasik that I've noticed personally is that I need a bit more light for reading.
