Getting anti Depo vibes from GP practice?

I'm 46 and depo has been my contraceptive of choice right from the beginning. I opted for it along with my GP back in the day because I was taking other meds at that time that wouldn't have worked with pill that would have been first choice.

I think I was on depo from about 1995 to about 2005 ish. Bad marriage etc made for a break until about 2008. Then back on depo from 2008 until about 2010. Break to have kids. Then back on depo in about 2012 until now. (No sure any of this is relevant)

It works. It's easy. No side effects. I'm a happy bunny. No meno symptoms I think. (Well I'm as mad as fuck quite a lot recently but I think that just because I'm surrounded by idiots at times rather than my hormones or lack thereof Grin)

I see the practice nurse each 12 weeks. I can't remember the exact questions but 3 visits ago they tried to persuade me to consider alternatives. (I'm a healthy weight. I exercise regularly. Weight baring exercise too. And I take a calcium supplement). I dismissed the issue and we carried on.

Today I received a call from GP receptionist. GP wants to see me to discuss my depo. I repeated the details above. I feel informed and happy with my choice. She offered a telephone appt. I'm happy to go with this, but she didn't have an appt in the next 2 weeks before my next depo is due. So she's going to go back to GP asking what he/she wants to do.

So, finally, my question, what's likely to be the worry with my depo?! I'm not inclined to change something that works and works well for me.

Thanks for baring with me!!

It'll be the bone density thing. GP will want to document a discussion with you so she can honestly say you've made an informed decision. Don't sweat it, they are very unlikely to withdraw a contraceptive that works so well for you.

Thanks. Any idea though if the concerns are valid? Or valid for me? I run and I row which covers impact and strength stuff. I'm a healthy weight these days (Hmm) and try to remember my calcium supplement

Think you're not supposed to be on it for more than 2 years at a time due to bone density risks. Maybe you could get a bone scan to check they are ok and unaffected

The risks are real for anyone on the depo. Weight bearing exercises, bmi, diet including calcium and vitamin d all helps. In our surgery we like to discuss at 50. But this may be too late for your bone density to recover before menopause. There are set guidelines we can use to advise but we also know one size does not fit all. The faculty of reproduction and sexual health is a really good resource. It's free website.

My story is the same as yours. My Depo was stopped this year for the same reasons. It doesn't matter if you keep fit, it's to do with the risks to bone density.

Thank you. I really appreciate your responses.
