Roseacea

Anyone else suffer with this? I am suffering really badly at the monet - skin very very red and inflamed - even got acne on top of it.

Has anyone here managed to treat roseacea successfully? Am getting so fed up with it - my job involves working with the public in a health capacity so I feel very self conscious about it. Make up isn't really doing a good job of covering it up.

my dad had it really bad on his nose but i dont know much about it, sorry

tigerschick · 05/08/2007 16:32

I was put on a caffine-free diet to try and get rid of it. Didn't work for me but may do for you

Also was given some cream but that just made it really itchy

Good luck.

don't really know if it's the same thing, but i have lots of red splotches just below my neck with some small red broken capillaries.

recently got an Anew clinical laser thing from avon (about £10) and it has reduced redness quite noticeably.

JackieNo · 05/08/2007 16:39

I'm currently trying the Lilylolo mineral make up, as it's supposed to be non-irritating for people with rosacea. It's certainly very comfortable on, but not a cure, just a bit of a cover-up. It's no fun, is it.

I've been using Metrogel on prescription morning and night since about March, and my rosacea has definitely improved, although it took at least a month. Have also given up coffee but I've no idea whether that's helped or not.

tigerschick · 05/08/2007 16:56

That's what I was given - Metrogel. I guess you just have to try things until something works for you

RubySlippers · 05/08/2007 16:57

i had acne (severe) for many years
i heard wonderful things about the sher system, and they now do treatments for rosacea

flamingtoaster · 05/08/2007 17:19

There is some evidence that roseacea is related to H.Pylori (a bacteria that many adults carry in their digestive system) and that reducing/eliminating it radically improves the roseacea. Heavy doses of antibiotics are used for H.Pylori - but if you want to try natural remedies to reduce the H.Pylori to see if you get roseacea to subside then Manuka Honey (10+ strength) three times a day, or Mastic Gum capsules are worth trying. It's also been suggested certain foods can reduce H.Pylori including garlic and onion. A friend's husband found that anytime he was on antibiotics his roseacea reduced but wouldn't try a longer term programme of Manuka etc.

TwoToTango · 05/08/2007 17:30

Has your doctor prescribed any antibiotics?

Theclosetpagan · 05/08/2007 17:35

Thank you for all your replies. Haven't seen my GP in a while but might go in and see him this week. The H.Pylori theory is a new one to me and worth reading more about - might have a chat with my GP about that - he's pretty open to new suggestions and theories so am sure he'd allow me to try any teatment within reason.

i have had this for 5 years and it really made me miserable. the third gp i saw was really good. prescribed zineryt (topical anitbiotic) which helps. dermatologist recommended only using moisturisers like aveeno and to moisturise regularily which also helped but the redness was always there and flamed up occassionaly.

I have started seeing an acupuncturist and am on various herbs and cut out alchol (almost) coffee and hot spices including garlic ginger chilli etc. my skin is almost clear and the best it has been in 5 years.

only been doing the acupuncture and herb a couple of weeks but am amazed and holding my breath incase it comes back.

good luck with getting rid of it

samanthar · 05/08/2007 18:22

mine is terrible..didnt think i minded but its started to get on my nose too and that makes me think ppl might think i drink too much which is the opposite of the truth as am trying to just have occasional glass ...sadly sun, coffee, stress, alcohol all make it worse and heat

mankyscotslass · 05/08/2007 21:13

Mine is bad at the moment too, the heat really does not help at all. Had a big family do today, I was very uncomfrtable thinking about how bad it was, and that made it worse!
I use metrocream, not gel, as I found the gel flaked under makeup. I also use mineral make up, far better than liquid stuff....

fearscape · 06/08/2007 10:04

My dad has this - my mum does her best to "manage" him to keep it to a minimum! He is meant to steer clear of alcohol and caffeine (don't think this works too well in practice ) and always wears a special non-irritating suncream on his face to avoid flare-ups from the sun. He has had tetracycline, both topical and systemic, when it has been bad in the past and now has a special moisturiser but I'm afraid I can't remember what it is! Can you ask your gp to be referred to a dermatologist if it is not improving? My dad has private health care through his company and so managed to see one, I think they were much more help than a gp.

glasshouse · 06/08/2007 11:20

Hi there, I hate to say this but I've suffered with Rosacea for over 20 years and nothing has ever cured it. I've used the tetracyclines, metrogel and also another antibotic cream called Skinoren which was useful when it was flaring badly. The Sher system is a gentle cleansing system that puts a great deal of emphasis on washing and rinsing well (at least 20 washes) which I still do and helps, although I don't use their products - too expensive. At the moment my rosacea is contained by evening primrose oil of all things, I've been taking it for another reason but have noticed that in the last two months my skin has cleared immensely. I'll always have to use a foundation to cover the broken veins but the flushing/spots have gone. Sorry about the lenght of this post but I hope it helps.

glasshouse · 06/08/2007 11:21

Sorry, meant to say I react badly to sunlight so always make sure that I have at least a factor 25 on my face. Clinique's City Block goes up to a factor 40 and can be worn under foundation. Hope this helps.

Theclosetpagan · 06/08/2007 20:23

Thanks folks - am trying a caffeine free month and am seeing my GP this week. glasshouse - your experience with Evening Primrose Oil sounds good so might get some of that as well. Have tried the Sher System in the past but it's just too expensive for me to buy the stuff on a regular basis. Their Rosacea pack is £140 - way out of my price range.
