Husband Referred Suspected Sarcoma

Hi,
My husband has a large, hard painless lump on his calf, which seems to have appeared spontaneously. He went to the doctors today and he’s been referred to the Cancer Department at our local hospital for further testing and has a blood test tomorrow morning. It’s not confirmed but the doctors thought it was highly likely to be this, due to symptoms and appearance. I can’t stop worrying that my husband has cancer and I’m going to lose him. Does anyone has any experience of this?

Thanks!

Has he been referred to dermatology?

TreeHuggerMom · 08/08/2019 22:25

No not dermatology. He has a blood test tomorrow and then referral for ultrasound and MRI.

My husband had this.

He had one lump removed 13 years ago and another removed 2 years ago.

Please please please ask for a referral to the Royal Marsden. They see hundreds of sarcomas a year, regional hospital see 10, if that.

Do they think it is soft tissue?

Hey sorry me again! Just gathering my thoughts for what may be helpful
For you.

Firstly they do not know if this sill is a sarcoma - there are other things which can present as the same thing so until they have the scans and a biopsy they can't say what it is.

If it is a sarcoma then you will need to take it step by step. You'll get the biopsy pathology which will give an indicator of the type of tumour.

The main info comes when the tumour is removed and pathology is done on it which is often after 6 weeks radiotherapy - some local hospitals are still recommending radio after tumour removal but the Marsden say it must be before.

Once a tumour is removed they can say how good the margins were on it.

Chemotherapy is often not advised with sarcoma and my husband has thankfully never had that.

I'm hoping you never need any of this advice but please know that if this is a sarcoma then the best thing you can do is get a referral to the Marsden ASAP - they have the best surgeons and gold standard care.

Feel free to ask me anything. I have been where you are and I am doing ok!
