Terrible tummy problems

[I've already posted this but no responses. Maybe I posted in the wrong thread.]

Background - I work in the reception of a financial firm, open plan, glass partitions, the works. What I’m saying is sound travels! shock

Over the past year, my tummy has been making strange noises after I eat. It’s a continuous churning on the lower left side of my tummy… pops, gurgles, all very loud and goes for 40mins or more.

I checked with my GP and he says its nothing only trapped wind.
I’ve also done one of those allergy tests… came back with milk and eggs, which doesn’t mean much. I’m most vegan/veg anyway, so no milk. I don’t drink alcohol. I usually eat eggs and its fine. It seems to happen no matter what I eat, even toast!

Anyone had experience of this? Presumably it’s common enough.
It’s really affecting my confidence at work. People working next to me and even clients waiting to go in can hear, I can see some of them look up. I’m so embarrassed!

Do you exercise regularly? Maybe going for a brisk walk after eating lunch would help move things along. Do you suffer pain or discomfort besides the noise? There are foods that will cause more wind than others so if you look at the FODMAP diet - you can get an app showing foods to avoid - it may help pick and choose which foods to avoid. I steer clear of mushrooms, garlic, onions, broccoli etc as I know they will cause wind.

Thank you @Drum2018 I didn't know about FODMAP. I'll google it. Is it a whole diet? I also didn't think about onions.

Yes I exercise regularly.

I'm like this I also suffered with tummyache and wind Blush. I decided to cut out wheat and see if it made a difference and it did. I ate bread again to double check and symptoms returned. It took about 2 weeks for all symptoms to go. It's a pain to stick to but it's worth it ime.

Maybe cut out bread at lunchtime and see if the noises reduce?

What about some probiotics or kombucha? I'd suggest kefir, but it's milk based, although you can get it going in water if you make your own, but that's basically kombucha!

My sister suffers and finds that wheat makes it worse.

Drum2018 · 10/08/2019 17:21

I also think it could be related to my cycle, so I'm worse at certain times of the month. With the FODMAP I wouldn't be religious about following it but I find that some of the foods it says to avoid would definitely make me worse. I'd eat a yellow/greenish banana for instance, and find it helps with digestion, but I shouldn't eat a very ripe banana as that makes my tummy rumble more. I use the FODMAP a-z app and foods marked in green are ok but those in red are to avoid. I also take Fibe - fibre capsules which help digestion.

I have this too except mine’s caused by Crohn’s disease (you haven’t got Crohn’s).
I’ve done a lot of research on this, none of which helped me (because they don’t cure Crohn’s) but thought they might help you.

-charcoal tablet
-probiotics
-emptying your bowels first thing in the morning
-eating little and often rather than a large meal.

Also, could you mask the noise with a fan.

MingeOnFire · 18/08/2019 13:15

Main culprits for me are wheat, most dairy, artificial sweeteners, onion and garlic. Other things like potato, tomato and pepper sometimes seem to have an effect. It's a nightmare, you have my sympathy

Aqueo517 · 18/08/2019 14:46

It is a nightmare. I’ve had it for 20 years now, it’s actually my worst crohns symptom (thankfully!). It just destroys your self confidence. How do you stop yourself feeling mortified when you’re sat in a meeting and your guts sound like faulty plumbing. You become self conscious of it everywhere-the theatre, cinema, dentist waiting room, coffee at a friends house. I can never really relax.

Pancakeflipper · 18/08/2019 14:51

I've had similar. I am currently avoiding v bread as found it is worse when I have bread. Its stopped the tummy orchestra and exploding poos but not the bloating... Might have to remove all wheat/gluten as I am a pasta addict.

Afternooninthepark · 18/08/2019 19:33

I get this too, its been really bad recently. My guts just gurgle and growl so bad, its like I have a monster stuck in my guts! So embarrassing. I also get really bad wind Blush
