My ds had pnuemonia about 2 months ago. The prob is he didnt have the classic symptoms. One night he got a really high temp 106 and calpol and nurofean didnt bring it down. I took him 2 emer doc he didnt seem interested and said it viral and treated me like a paranoid mum and sent us home. The next day his temp about 99 but complaining of tummy ache so I took him 2 GP, she did give him a thorough check over and she found nothing and said probably viral. That night he woke about 2am with bad tummy pains, again gave calpol/nurofean by 5am he screaming in agony so rang emergency doc, he would of been able to hear him screaming as ds was lay next 2 me whilst on phone, but doc said he had already told me it was viral and refused 2 c him. So put phone down and went straight 2 hosp, but when got 2 hosp ds picked up but decided 2 get him checked out as he said he still had some pain. After waiting 3 hrs doc saw him 4 approx 1 min and said all ok prob viral and sent us home. Ds son ill all day but not 2 bad but that night he started with pains again, part of me didnt know what 2 do as they all said nothing wrong with him. Anyway took him 2 emer docs, and again he picked up when got there. Doc seemed very confused but sent us 2 the childrens ward.Once there they were brill and picked up pneumonia straight away apparently the tummy pain coz he had so much fluid under his lungs it was putting pressure on his tum, they said he must of been in agony and they kept him in hosp 4 a week. Through all this he had no cough and no prob breathing. But since the pneumonia his asthma has been really bad,it was only very mild b4,does anyone know if this is likely tb shorterm or has the pnue done permanent damage. Also has anyone dc got pnue a 2nd time, I am so worried he will get it again and it wont be picked up again. Im getting so panicky every he feels abit hot or coughs.
Sorry it so long winded, think I needed 2 get it off my chest.

orangehead,

As your son has asthma and has had pneumonia, I would thing that he would be a priority for the pneumonia and flu vaccination. My son gets them every year and has not had either illness. Check into it.

Ds1 has had pneumonia three times now - he is nine. He had the cough though and it came on very quickly. I had a go at my surgery for the triage nurse not listening to me on the phone and fobbing me off. They now listen and we are seen straight away now they are aware of ds1's history. He also has repeated tonsilitis and this infection can go to his chest if not treated promptly. Neither time has anything been heard on ds1's chest at the GP's, but the pneumonia showed up on X-ray which they sent us for because they now take me seriously.

Sorry you've had such a crappy experience though - I hate it when Dr's don't take sensible parents seriously, after all, they do know their children best.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 01/08/2007 22:51

ds1 had this and was hospitalised for a week as i couldnt control his temperature and he kept having febrile convulsions.
he also had a kidney infection at the same time but its a very long and upsetting story for me that i wont go into fully.
to break it down, he was unwell for 2 months, 2 months before they listened to me and agreed he was unwell.
his infection markers in his blood were over 200 when they apparently should have been around 60.
by the time they admitted he was ill, he had scarring to his kidneys and now has to have low dose anti'bs until he is 5.

i know how you feel, worrying in case he gets ill again.
every time ds gets whiney and wingey i think the worst as i feel guilty for letting myself get fobbed off so many times.

you will ease up after a bit and start to relax more. it took me 5/6 months to relax.

www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/facts/pneumonia.htm

Here is one article about vaccine that I found for UK.

Leati · 01/08/2007 22:57

LadyOfTheFlowers and Aero

Look into this Vaccine. Once you have pnuemonia you are more likely to have a repeat. It is really good.

Aero · 01/08/2007 23:37

Ds1 has had the flu vaccine Leati, but for some reason he wasn't offered it this year. He usually is and I forgot to ask at the time.

Leati · 01/08/2007 23:48

Aero,

Yeah, sometimes you have to remind them. It is important for kids with asthma because they are in the "high risk" category.

orangehead · 02/08/2007 00:08

leati- what age can they have the vaccines.
lady and aero- thanks and sorry u had rough time 2, it really knocks you

I am not sure on the age...I know DS's first year we had to all get them instead of him. So I am thinking somewhere between 6 months and a year. Because by the second year he had them.

My ds2 had pneumonia when he was 2, started off with what we thought was a normal cough,..... just wen't on and on... went to gp after about 2 weeks, told all ok, normal virrus.... carried on the usual calpol etc ( was having really high temps ).... then he just deteriorated, would just lie silent all day on the sofa, no even cring ... gp sent us for blood tests.
we went to the hospital, he was having 'rigors' and the blood ladies were so concerned they took him to a&e, then he was admitted to paeds, who did a chest xray and found he had pneumonia!!!!!!
he weighed less at this point then he had done at a year old.
It was really awful.
NOW fit and well, although is more prone to chesty type problems.
I'm glad your little one is well now. Think you'll find when he is unwell in future, coughs and colds may always seem a little worse, so may trigger off his asthma.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 02/08/2007 08:04

I had this at age 4. My symptoms were coughing, fever of 104, and feeling sick (not being sick).
Doctor did a home visit and said I had a 'tummy bug'. My parents were not satisfied, so called for an ambulance. It took a while for doctors to realise what I had. I had a chest x ray and stayed in hospital for a few days. Don't really remember much about it apart from getting lots of treats brought in to hospital!

I do have asthma, but hardly have to use my inhaler. I also suffer with hayfever and struggle with things like the smells of washing powder, perfumes etc I will have sneezing fits!
Apart from that I have fully recovered. I didn't realise it could happen again tbh. My parents have never really told me what was wrong with me, just read the link and learnt a lot!

Novacane · 02/08/2007 09:49

My Ds had pneumonia last Nov (2 1/2 yo.)
Afraid have a similar story about goin to the docs and them saying 'its only viral' etc etc, but saw a fantastic Dr at out of hours who sent him straight up to peads as he didn't like his chest recessions. I only actually took him because I work for out of hours and knew they wouldn't mind looking at him.
It was a good job beacause he was terribly poorly that night, it will haunt me forever.

I was a nervous wreck for a good 6 months after he had pneumonia, as he kept picking up infections, (ear), I was sure he was going to pick it up again. He hasn't thankfully, but I was informed that he would be prone to infections for a good six months after as his immune system took a battering and all the tubes in lungs etc will be sensitive.

Touch wood we have been illness free for 2 whole months, nearly three!

Wholey understand where your coming from, I'm only just starting to relax a bit now

Littleboo - that's exactly what happened the first time ds1 had pneumonia and he lost so much weight. He was three at the time. The next time it happened, the cough was instantly recognisible and it came on overnight! My guess is that the first time it started as a viral infection, but got no better and by the time he finally got his x-ray, the bacterial infection was present and well and truly established.

Surely though, if a child hasn't eaten for weeks, was clearly losing weight, a cough with fever was present, and they're quiet and lethargic and feeling low then it's pretty obvious there's something wrong. They finally took me seriously when he coughed so much he was sick all over the car, but what he vomited was almost completely phlegm. That's when they sent me to the hospital with him. As soon as we got the diagnosis and he got the correct treatment, it wasn't long until he was on the road to recovery. We have no problems having him seen at the GP's now though.
