Flat Feet

Ds2 (3yrs) has very flat feet. His ankles seem to drop down on the inside of his leg and his heels splay out to the sides! GP reckons they dont correct flat feet anymore, but at 3yr check nurse was surprised by this & thought he should see a podiatrist. Anyone elses kids had this prob? Also sometimes complains of pain in feet & knees (day or night)

They don't correct flat feet, but a physio can give you exercises to increase the muscle tone, and they can refer you to orthotics, who can take a mould of ds's feet, and make some flexible inserts which go inside the shoes, and give more support under the arch.

Hth (dd1 has feet as flat as ironing boards, and as big!)

The insoles dd1 wears are made of specially moulded flexible foam, not uncomfortable at all.

Lou33 how old is your dd1? Did your GP automatically refer her or did you ask? Any improvement?

She is 12 1/2 now, but has had inserts since she was about 2 or 3. Various types and flexibility. It hasn't improved the lack or arches as such, butwith physio it can increase muscle tone, so therefore less aching. When she was about 4 or 5 , one of the exercises was to pick up a pencil between her toes, try and scribble on paper like that etc. Walking over sand barefoot is another good one. Insoles can make the foot ache more to startw ith though, as the foot is being held ina position it isn'ty used to.
