Am watching 'Honey we're killing the kids' and the 6 yr old girl is clinically obese. But she doesn't look much bigger than my 6 yr old neice who I am quite worried about. How much does the adverage 6yr old girl weigh and what would clinically obese be?

You can look it up in the weight charts in the red books for hvs. I guess that if the height and the weight are in totally different places it could signify something wrong. I don't know how useful the charts are for slightly older children though as everyone grows at such different rates.

thanks...will go and dig out red bk. Its a difficult situation with my niece as her lifestyle & diet are quite like something off the tv and I do worry about diabetes etc. However, it is hard to know how to say anything to her parents.

you could try taliking to her directly.

I must admit that I hadn't thought of that Trina. Her grandparents are also v worried about her health and I know they have tried talking to her dad but he laughs it off.

Talking to her directly? She is six. What would you say?

TrinaJ · 31/07/2007 20:08

-That, I'm not so sure about.
But the kids on those programmes seem quite receptive.
If you're close to her she may be happy just to chat.

No, I don't think I am close enough to her as she lives abroad and I only see her about 3 times a year

That's such a tricky one but I think you can't really say anything especially as you see them so little. It's really gutting not being able to change things though, so I can see why you'd want to.
My in laws have almost nothing fresh in their diet and even the kids eat crisps / chocs when they want and there are quite a few health problems in the family. But I don't dare say anything as just don't know how I can; the only thing I manage to do is provide meals from fresh ingredients when they come to us
