Tonsillitis - how long can it go on - DS1 had it for 11 days with high temps and no sign of recovery

He's on his second lot of antibiotics.

He's needed nurofen and calpol every day to keep his temperature under 40. I do understand the need for the body to fight infection with temperature, but over 40 is ridiculous, surely?

He's been to the doctor three times (once today).

He won't tell me where it hurts and is ridiculously brave, even when clearly in a lot of pain.

And he's barely eaten today.

Anyone else had a child ill this long with tonsillitis? He had such a world-weary look when I gave him some medicine this evening. He's only 3

Aww sucks, doesnt it?

DD is awaiting an appointment to have her adenoids removed and gromits put in.

Aw, SSN, thank you for your posts. Sorry you've had so much worry with your DS

Don't worry - I'd already considered pretty much everything under the sun, so you've not sowed seeds of fretting in my mind.

I wondered earlier about appendicitis (tis the way my mind works - I'll wonder about rabies tomorrow, probably ) - but he's not complained at all about stomach pain, his tummy was soft to touch and he didn't flinch at all when the GP pressed it earlier. I've had my appendix out, so know how painful it can be.

Will see how he is tonight and take him back tomorrow if he's no better. Thanks, all.

Thanks and good luck!

aw I really do feel for you. I had it as a child constantly and was really really ill with it. I had to have an emergancy operation when I was 7 to take them out as I couldn't physically eat. I think my mum said I only weighed just under 3 stone and I was quite tall for my age. I hope that you get something sorted quickly x

Could he have strep throat? I believe it is more serious and uses a different antibiotic but he would have a sore throat and a high fever. Did the doctor swab his throat and have the lab analyse it?

If not go back, strep throat untreated can lead to more serious conditions.

hunkermunker · 31/07/2007 11:14

He slept through, woke without a temperature and is, in his own words "Much better" [relieved]

He was grey yesterday, and so hot and so poorly. Poor little lad. He's much bouncier today though - toddlers are really made out of rubber, aren't they?!

Glad hes feeling a little better today .
My ds ,3.4, is having his tonsils taken out in September. He had tonsilitis about 6 times last year and has had it twice this year.
I hope your lo continues to get better. He sounds a real little champ.
