Hi,

I have a new mole ( well it’s been there about 8 months, no change in appearance )
I thought it was just an age spot but thought I’d get it checked anyway whilst at the doctors ( for an unrelated reason )
I wasn’t particularly worried about it but now I’m freaking out that I might have skin cancer.
If this has happened to you, how quickly do you get a firm diagnosis?

Many thanks.

Just checking in before my appointment tomorrow.
I too downloaded the SkinVision app as it had been mentioned on here, ( I had no idea apps like that existed! ). My mole has come back low risk, which I must say has really reassured me, however I would never take an apps assessment as a 100% correct diagnosis ( they say that themselves ) but they will flag up anything that looks suspicious so it’s a good thing imo. Better to get a mole checked out!
I still won’t be totally reassured until I get seen at the hospital though!
I downloaded for free and had 1 picture analysed free. Any other assessments are £3.99. Worth it imo.
Anyway, hope you’re all doing ok, I will post tomorrow after I’ve been seen by specialist.
xx

@jimmychooing did they remove the other 2 moles anyway? Or is there a possibility they won’t? I was under the impression (from my gp) that it would be removed.

@tomtom1999xx that is reassuring, good luck for tomorrow x

jimmychooing · 18/07/2019 14:08

They didn't remove the other two, no. The dermatologists have been quick to remove anything that even slightly worried them but these ones are just 'unusual'

jimmychooing · 18/07/2019 14:17

I'd hope that the apps at least tell you why they think it's high risk, so that reassurance or confirmation could be sought from a dermatologist

Twotome · 18/07/2019 14:55

It states that similarities have been detected that appear in the most common types of skin cancers including irregular patterns, multiple colours, asymmetry and uneven borders.

Not sure if that means mine has all of those, or it’s the standard wording. @jimmychooing

jimmychooing · 18/07/2019 14:59

I'm glad you've got an appointment to get it checked twoforme, I know how worrying it can be Thanks. I suspect that's a standard wording, but I can't see any of those things int he picture you've provided (obviously not a dermatologist!!) so fingers crossed it's nothing and the app is being cautious - maybe because you've told it that the mole is new/itchy/changed?

jimmychooing · 18/07/2019 15:01

I should also add that I have had 4 removed and all been fine. 2 of those were flagged as high risk by the mole clinic and then I actually saw a dermatologist who took one look and said they were fine! He took them off because I was fretting after the mole clinic but they were fine as he said. Hence my concerns about the apps.

But it's a worry and hopefully you'll be seen very soon and all is well x

I too used the skinvision app last year. I had a new ‘mole’ on my leg and was worrying (health anxiety for many years) so thought I’d seek reassurance from the app. My mole came back high risk, not what I was expecting at all. I saw the doctor the next day and he said it was nothing to worry about, it was in fact just a scab which dropped off a few days later.
I know skinvision is meant to be one of the more reputable sites but for me, the app was completely wrong and I should have just seen a gp straight away.

Good luck tomorrow with your appointment, you’re totally doing the right thing having it looked at in person.

namechanged2000 · 18/07/2019 15:07

I did years ago. They looked at it, scraped it and took pictures of it next to a measuring tape, called back in 3 months and took more pics with measuring tape to see if it had grown.

Twotome · 18/07/2019 17:02

@jimmychooing thank you, I wasn’t too concerned and that’s not the mole I was at the doctors for, but the doctor (and now the app Grin) have told me I should be.

I guess I’ll know soon enough!

jimmychooing · 18/07/2019 18:43

Good luck twotome, please post back and let us know how you get on

tomtom1999xx · 19/07/2019 12:24

Hi all.
Just out of hospital - all good. < so relieved! >
It’s nothing, just a normal mole/ age spot. ( I’m in my 50’s )

Doctor gave me a thorough body check & all good.

So please, if anyone gets referred under the 2 week wait, it’s not always bad news!

Hopefully, I’ll stop staring at strangers skin now looking for any moles to compare.

Twotome
All the best for next week. & try not to worry, Flowers

jimmychooing · 23/07/2019 08:59

Good luck today twotome

Twotome · 23/07/2019 09:34

@jimmychooing thank you, I’ll update when I’m back.

Twotome · 23/07/2019 12:05

Just back, Dr wasn’t concerned, he thinks they are just normal moles. Photos were taken and I’m to go back in 3 months to check they haven’t changed.

I was panicky after the initial Dr referral and even more so after the skin vision app, so feeling very relieved.

Thanks for this post OP x

tomtom1999xx · 23/07/2019 12:28

Oh so relived for you Twotome thank you for updating.
I know skin cancer is ( on the whole ) very treatable if caught early, but still, just hearing the ‘C’ word sends most of us into a blind panic.

So happy for you ( us Smile )

Fab news!!
@Dontforgetyourbrolly I had gone about one on the sole of my foot and mentioned in passing that I’ve been getting a few new ones keep popping up. He asked to look and then said he was concerned about the back one.

Glad your one came back OK.
Hey Twotome, I know this is an old thread but hoping you'll see this message. Just curious to know about the one on your foot that you originally went to the doctor about. What was it like? I've had a mole appear on the sole of my foot which my GP had urgently referred me to dermatologist for, so I'm bricking it Sad

I have had quite a few moles removed. This is one that turned out to be melanoma in situ which means it hasn’t penetrated the layers. Just had a wider excision to make sure all was clear. Had another removed 2 weeks ago which was also melanoma in situ and 2 punch biopsies of displastic moles-on the change.
Ask someone to take photographs so you can see how they change.

Hi, thanks for message. How big is this one in the photo? X
SophieJo · 27/11/2021 06:57

It was about 4 mm.
