Twin block braces

Oh my god, my poor teen had these fitted today. He is dribbling. He can’t talk. He can’t eat. His friends are laughing at him and calling him names and he’s very upset. So upset he cried in my arms. He’s to wear them 23 hours a day for the next 6-9 months.
I know it’s only day 1 but, dear god in heaven, how is he to cope? How am I to cope? Anyone through this and survived? Anyone going through it? I’m on the brink of taking them out and cancelling the whole treatment. He is almost 14 and has a “traumatic overbite.”

applepieicecream I just did a quick google and can't find anything saying you shouldn't - did they say why? We were told that every meal counts as another 24 hours of wear - lots of orthodontic sites agreeing with that advice, and DS was out of his braces in 6 months instead of 18 in the end, so it was true for us.

It is definitely 23 hours a day I do this for a living!
Take them out for eating to start then slowly work up With different foods.
The alternative is usually orthognathic surgery when he is older so it's much easier to wear the twin blocks!

lonelypiggy they just said it wasn’t necessary and to take them out and it wouldn’t make a difference. I think she still wears them 23 hours a day. Just not when eating

Is this on the NHS or private OP?

They can be uncomfortable, all the things you've described are normal, will last about a week until hes used to them completely, but his mouth will adjusted and every day will become a little easier for him. The talking funny and dribbling will cease. His friends dont sound like good friends.

Horrible thing to go through, Invisalign now encoperate the twin block into their aligned and are much much kinder, and straighten the teeth as it pushes the jaw so you're not waiting 6-9 months purely for his jaw to move.

The best advice I can give him, is no matter what people say, or how crappy it is, wear it as much as physically possible. The more he wears it the wuicker he will be out of it. Especially if he is due a growth spurt, will get things moving alot faster and it may not be on as long as you think.

Try getting him to read a book out loud while he wears it to help with his speech x

Estin with them in will speed up the process, it is stretching the jaw muscles to accommodate moving the lower jaw forward. So when you eat these muscles are used the most, therefore will stretch more. A bit like warming up a stiff rubber band, when it warms up it stretches further.

Stick with it. The results will amaze you. The pain will ease up after a few days, we used regular painkillers for a couple of days. There are YouTube videos about them inc practising speaking.

Encourage him to be proud of them not hide them, that bit is about encouraging a positive mindset. Tell him he will be getting a handsome jawline.

Our son was prescribed these. Couldn't get on with them and we got a referral to a different Orthodondist via the hospital for an alternative treatment. The alternative involved 2 teeth being removed and then tram track braces, which he's had for almost 2 yrs (should come off in the next 2/3 months).
