Mosquito bites from Hell....

boble1 · 04/07/2019 23:38

Hi

I'm the proud owner of 2 mosquito bites, one near my outer elbow and one further up my arm. I woke up with them yesterday morning.

I usually react badly to them and had one last year, the size of a fried egg and needed antibiotics.

I've drawn a circle around these 2 and they are still getting bigger.

Obviously, I don;t want to waste the GP's time but how big should it go before asking if I need antibiotics?

Thank you xx

PS Sorry about the bad photo.

The skin is boiling hot to the touch and my arm is swollen too.

As a fellow sufferer, you have my sympathy. Not sure if it's worth a doctor's visit yet but a bag of peas always helps with the suffering. When I was younger I got 42 bits on one ankle - camping trip in Canada 😭. Would antihistamines help ?

travailtotravel · 04/07/2019 23:47

Antihistamines. I use tiger balm really helps remove the itch and helps with inflammation too.

CloudRusting · 04/07/2019 23:50

I had similar last week. Took about 5 days for it to stop feeling hot and itching like a Bastard. I used hc45 cream and ice packs. I thought about going to the doctors but monitored it and there was no tracking lines out so if it was infected as opposed to just bad reaction then my body obviously cleared it.

boble1 · 04/07/2019 23:54

AH thank you!

I've been putting a cream on that I got last year when I had the antibiotics.

I last drew around it at 2.30 this afternoon and it's grown about another inch.

I only saw the GP after asking a pharmacist about it and he said it's infected and go and get some antibiotics.

Hopefully it'll go down during the night.

To top it off, I have another bite on my boob Blush

Bad luck boble - do you normally react like that to bites?

Take an antihistamine if you have one, bit of antiseptic over the centre of the bite. They don't look infected from the pic, but if they're still rubbish in the morning I'd go ask a pharmacist.

boble1 · 05/07/2019 00:07

Hi

It's difficult to see from my crap photo but the 2 bites are red and there is a large ring of swollen pink skin around them. That's the bit I'm concerned about.

I attach a photo of my "fried egg" bite I got last year.

That looks painful! Painkillers, antihistamines, Eurax cream if it's itchy and a trip to the GP or nearest pharmacist.

girlofthenorth · 05/07/2019 00:18

my daughter has had a few the same
If not any better in the morning or worse ring GP or ask to see practice nurse - you might need Fucidin which is something you can't get at the chemist , it's a sort of antibacterial cream . I'm sure that would help , but you may need antibiotics.

boble1 · 05/07/2019 00:18

Thanks.

I'll go and see the pharmacist in the morning.

Urgh, I hope they leave me alone tonight x

Piriton, antisan, germoline and you can put eumovate on for the reaction as long as its not infected. My guess is they aren't infected. But get it checked out. Don't put fucidin on if it's not infected.

boble1 · 05/07/2019 00:50

@Legoroses

Oh bugger - that's what I've been using.

An ice pack, or as previously suggested, frozen peas, should give you some relief.
Bearing in mind that you had to have antibiotics previously for bites, I think I would see my GP. Maybe call NHS 111 in the first instance to see what they suggest.
Hope they get better soon.

managedmis · 05/07/2019 02:28

The pic that you last posted was from last year, right? That looks awful.

The pics you posted in the op look bad - I'd see how they are in the morning. Have you scratched them? Mine go like that, bloody awful things

Ice cubes or a boiling hot teaspoon pressed on the area relieves the itch.

FogCutter · 05/07/2019 02:35

I react really badly to mosquito bites too, just like your 'egg' picture.

Antihistamine tablet, antihistamine cream and an ice pack should help.

campion · 05/07/2019 02:49

I'd say you probably need antibiotics for those bites if they're still growing. At the very least see a gp. Faffing about with creams and the like won't make any difference if they're infected.

Otherwise oral antihistamines can calm them down eventually as long as there's no infection. I take them as soon as a bite appears as I'm mosquito (or whichever insects like me) bait.

boble1 · 05/07/2019 10:36

Hi

Thank you for all the replies.

The ring has got bigger during the night, it's spread around the back of my arm now Angry

Omfg please tell me you're at the docs with that

girlofthenorth · 06/07/2019 00:11

Did you get antibiotics OP?

SarfE4sticated · 06/07/2019 00:16

Is it definitely a mossie bite and not a horsefly bite? They are notoriously horrible - google it. You usually end up with a weeping blister too.
Does't really help you, but just throwing it in!

boble1 · 06/07/2019 11:10

Hi

Miraculously, it's much better today.

I didn't go to the GP in the end, just put Fucidin cream on, that I got for my "fried egg" bite, last year.

Thank you for your help - it's much appreciated.

xx
