Colonoscopy tomorrow - moviprep not working

Hi everyone, I’m having a colonoscopy tomorrow afternoon and started the prep this evening as told by the letter I received, I started drinking the first litre at 7pm finishing it at 8.30 and haven’t had any bowel movements yet.

I was wondering if anyone who’s had one done could tell me if this is normal or not, next lot is tomorrow morning, I’m having bad stomach cramps and awful bloating so hopefully it starts working soon.

I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy yesterday. I had to take Klean prep the day before which I believe is similar to Moviprep. I googled loads of advise. It’s so much better chilled and you can mix it with clear squash I used lemon cordial. I also sucked on a lemon wedge before and after each gulp and chased with ginger beer after. I started mine at 6pm and started going to the loo around 8pm til 1am and went a few more times the next morning. Oh and I used a straw that was a must!

Afternooninthepark · 16/07/2019 16:38

And my advise is to eat very little 4-5 days beforehand, I was suppose to take 2 litres of the prep on Sunday then up to another 2 litres the next morning but I only managed 1 and half litres. When I went to the hospital they asked me how much I had consumed and I told them 3 litres and they said that I probably hadn’t consumed enough and my bowels may not be clear enough (I didn’t dare tell them I had only had 1 and a half litres!) however when I had it done my colon was completely clear, I assume it’s because I had hardly any food a few days before. Obviously, I don’t recommend not completing the full amount that was just my experience!

Egghead68 · 16/07/2019 18:03

I think that is good advice.
I have eaten only boiled and jelly sweets for 2 days and before that ate a low residue diet for 7 days. I have also been using 3 movicol sachets a day and, for the final 3 days, dulcolax. I'm also doing tap-water enemas tonight and tomorrow. Tomorrow will be clear fluids only then the double dose moviprep but hopefully there really shouldn't be much in my colon by then. I'll take a little moviprep 5 hours before the procedure too to stop any slime or anything sticking to my colon just before the procedure.

Good luck tomorrow PotterHead1985. I slept OK after my Moviprep the last time (but it didn't work so that could have been why). As Afternooninthepark says, you can put squash in it (but not red/blue/purple as they can stain the colon) but I didn't find it tasted too nasty.

Afternooninthepark · 16/07/2019 18:23

Egghead68 Hope all goes well for you.

Egghead68 · 16/07/2019 19:18

Thank you Afternooninthepark

I feel so weak with not eating for 3 days, laxatives and lack of sleep that it’s a struggle to work.

Just hoping I am not one of the 20% who find the pain unbearable (and that the endoscopist is kind enough to abort or give more pain relief if I do - probably not on past performance).

fraxion · 17/07/2019 16:35

Fingers crossed it's not so bad for you this time Egghead. I'm not surprised you feel so weak 🙁

Egghead68 · 17/07/2019 17:19

Thanks Fraxion . Sorry about all the self-pity!

fraxion · 17/07/2019 17:59

Oh god you have every right to feel sorry for yourself after what you've had to endure!

justasking111 · 17/07/2019 18:36

I went without food did the moviprep, got into hospital needed the loo, had a bit of a turn and nearly knocked myself out on the sink. It really is horrid.

Egghead68 · 17/07/2019 20:39

Oh no! Hope you were OK.

About to start litre 3 of moviprep.

Longing for the good old days of only 2 litres in total.

Still not sure it’s working :(

orangeshoebox · 17/07/2019 20:42

I was advised to eat only 'white' stuff for a couple of days. no fibre, no coloured veg, no red meat. basically just white bread, eggs, cheese.
then one glass of picolax.

Egghead68 · 17/07/2019 20:42

I’m working on my laptop through the prep this time - it’s making it go by much more quickly.

I’m not bothering to stay sitting on the loo like last time - no point. I think I am immune to moviprep!

Egghead68 · 17/07/2019 20:43

I ate white stuff for around 5 days I think then just jelly and boiled sweets and sports drinks for another 3 days.

Egghead68 · 17/07/2019 20:45

Not sure what picolax is but I had 3 sachets of movicol a day for 7-10 days (forget now), 2 dulcolax pulls for 3 days, tap water enemas and now 4 litres of moviprep.

I think I have bowels of steel.

orangeshoebox · 17/07/2019 20:49

picolax is magnesium sulphate if I remember correctly, very effective. and you only need a small amount.

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 17/07/2019 20:53

For anyone having to endure Picolax/Moviprep, this old forum post might help you through:

singletrackworld.com/2009/02/the-picolax-thread-returns/

It certainly cheered me up at the time!

Egghead68 · 17/07/2019 20:53

I think I will ask for that if I have to have it again.

fraxion · 17/07/2019 20:56

I've got two sachets of Picolax sitting waiting for me on 29th July 😬

mrsed1987 · 17/07/2019 22:00

@Egghead68 fingers crossed for u

Egghead68 · 18/07/2019 06:02

Thanks Mrsed1987 !

Next challenge - walking from the train station to the hospital without passing out!

fraxion · 18/07/2019 07:50

Good luck today @Egghead68

Egghead68 · 18/07/2019 11:29

Thanks Fraxion

All done and 1000 times less traumatic than my previous gastroscopy. Endosvopist was on best behaviour (I had complained about him previously) and very slow, thorough and gentle. Although he said it would feel like the worst cramping of my life it was almost completely painless and I’d do it without sedation next time. They took loads of biopsies and found internal haemorrhoids but nothing else so good news so far.

Hope everyone else’s experiences are as good.

fraxion · 18/07/2019 12:41

So pleased to hear you had a much better experience this time @Egghead68! Were you aware what was happening while under sedation? My mum opted for no sedation but I'm not that brave!

Egghead68 · 18/07/2019 12:50

Hi - the sedation didn’t really do anything (the endoscopist also commented that I didn’t seem at all sedated) so I was fully conscious - as normal really, just watching the screen and asking questions. Now a couple of hours later I feel like I have had half a glass of wine. I wouldn’t bother with sedation again, although for people with more twisty anatomy it might be more important.
