Has anyone had hand, foot and mouth disease as an adult?

I’ve got it now, I caught it from my 8.5 month old. I feel so awful. My whole mouth and most of my throat is full of ulcers which makes swallowing anything, including my own saliva, extremely painful.
I’m so tired as I had a fever too a couple of days ago. Feel so run down. I’m also breastfeeding. I have no one to help so I’m running around after him all day, I don’t I’ll get a chance to heal as I can’t rest.
My hands and feet are coming out in blisters too now.

Any advice, especially on what to eat?

We got "Dynexan" from the pharmacy, to numb the pain inside the mouth and throat.
I first put it onto my daughter's dummy and so into her mouth - she went to sleep as soon as the pain was gone.
I then constructed a "dummy" for me.
Sorry i can't help with the eating problem - I simply lost three kg.

I had it. Awful time of it. Terrible ulcers, also got blisters on my hands and feet. Disgustingly all the skin peeled off my fingers and toes about four weeks later. Very glam Grin

Awful.

Yup, terrible for adults. I woke up one day and it felt like I was walking on drawing pins. Then my feet fell to pieces, the skin literally just delaminated from my foot but not all in one go, just massive chunks of skin and painful raw skin underneath. Toenails and finger nails came away from my nail bed at the cuticle and then worked their way up.

Only advice I can give is don't pick at anything, snip raggedy bits of skin or nails if they bother you, pulling or picking might year you to ribbons. Get some ambesol or bonjella for your mouth and gargle with salt water.

My DD(3.5) had it a few months ago. In addition to a smallish ulcer on her tongue she got a grand total of one spot on her hand and one on her foot!

I had it a year or so ago and yes, it was horrible as an adult. The really bad pain only lasted a few days for me but then all the blisters kind of hardened over and it was very strange, like I lost my sense of touch. My feet peeled badly and my hands peeled quite a bit too.

Food wise, not much to say as it's all so bloody painful. I had a few ice lollies as I found the cold soothing, even though the swallowing still hurt. Yoghurt would be better nutritionally I guess?

You have my sympathies, not least because I think anyone who hasn't had it dismisses it as a mild childhood illness (I know it can be severe in some children, but I believe it's universally accepted to be generally much worse in adults) and wonders what the hell the big deal is.

Urrgh, yes, awful. I only had the ulcers in my mouth and throat which was bad enough. Looks bed on ice cream and found one of the worst things was that unlike, say, flu I still had a normal appetite so fantasised about food all day while not being able to eat any. You have my sympathies!

OMG it’s horrendous! Eat-cold stuff like milk lollies and yoghurt. I hope you feel better soon.

I don’t have experience of hand foot and mouth but I frequently get very bad and multiple ulcers. At those times I live on yogurt, ice cream, and have also tried those meal replacement shakes people get whey they’re dieting...

Weirdly enough, pineapple is good for ulcers.

I've just stumbled across this thread looking for answers to the same question. Tender spots on hands and feet appearing yesterday/today and becoming more painful all the time.
God help me :(

How long does this last?

Choice4567 · 31/07/2019 08:54

Yep my partner and my mum caught from our one year old, awful for both

Extra thing to look out for- my mums ulcers on her tongue lasted 5 weeks so she went to the GP. It had turned into oral thrush. So just make sure you go to the GP if it goes on more than a couple of weeks
