Teething DS not eating enough

I know I'm panicking but DS (just 1 year old) is teething really badly. I took him to be weighed yesterday and he's lost 2 ozs since we last went (3 weeks' ago). He's gone from 4 bottles of milk + food a day to 2.5 bottles of milk and only a little food. Unfortunately he's also just on that cusp of eating more food and taking less milk. Please reassure me that he'll get his appetite back. Suddenly he looks so small - he's just fallen below 50th centile. The only food I can interest him in while he's teething is breadsticks and rice cakes so far. Any suggestions welcome! Thanks.

How long as he been not eating for?

My Ds (also just turned 1 - you should come and join the July 2006 post-natal thread ) had a couple of days of bad teething last week where he would not eat anything - he would drink his milk happily but would not tolerate anything else near his mouth so I ended up giving him extra bottles to ensure he got some calories in him - is this an option?

It only lasted a couple of days and he is now fully recovered and eating for England!

Plus, I don't know whether this will help - I took him to be weighed last week after 4 weeks and he had only put on 2oz (!) so I think their weight does level off as they are more active - so I am sure he will regain his weight once he starts eating again.

What is it with these July babies? I can't even tempt ds with his favourite meals at the moment.

Coley - lol. Me neither - last Monday, especially did garlic bread (his fave) for him and he just cried - in hindsight, not the best option for a teething baby as I think it was too hard and sharp for him to put in his mouth

Ceebee74: Thank you. Feel slightly better having read your post. I don't seem to be able to get extra milk into him (which is a first). He's been this way for 48 hours now - which I know isn't that long but I'm the type that worries and panics about the smallest thing! You're right about the weight levelling off - and the HV did say yesterday not to worry as he was being much more active now.

Teething is tough on them, poor things, I'm sure he'll come around.

littleboo · 28/07/2007 20:38

have you tried the teething granules, boots do them, as do NELSONS homeopathetic and seem to work well

hotbot · 28/07/2007 20:48

ahh kate am going thru this atm,,,, its soo awful for them isnt it, i ve found that yoghurt is greta as its obviuosly milk based and lovely and cold for their hot little gums.

pinkspottywellies · 28/07/2007 20:54

If he'll eat breadsticks how about dipping them in cream cheese? That would also be nice and cold. Also maybe freezing fruit smoothies into ice lollies to get some fruit down him.

Hi, my little one hardly eats (although will usually have milk) when teething, or if its hot. She seemed to lose/not gain any weight for months but is still active (incredibly so) and is now back on an average weight - 50th centile (had dropped to 25th i think - never took her to the weighing things much. and then was shocked when they weighed her at hospital and she hadn't gained anything in about 2 months )

So if he seems fine and happy I wouldn't worry so much. I really really don't think babies would starve themselves so I promise to myself to relax about it. Although to be honest I don't know where she gets her energy!!

his gums r going to be on fire..........so he'll really enjoy something cold to soothe his gums on........baby yogurt would be gr8 if u haven't tried that yet.......also sticks of carrot out of the fridge is good for him to bite on.do u have teething rings that u can put in the fridge????, i used to give dc bonjela and calpol 20 mins before feed to soothe the gums.

fawkeoff · 28/07/2007 21:02

my dc really like the hipp organic fennel drink cooled when they were a bit off when teething..........its supposed to soothe them as well.
