How long to hear back after NHS MRI (brain)?

Had brain MRI today and wasn't told when I would hear back.

All radiographer said was he didn't think I should be going home alone Hmm as I seemed very dizzy. I was assuming it will be all clear and no contrast was used but a little puzzled by the very sympathetic radiographer. I had my husband there so he took me home. Have had an emergency CT scan of brain and nothing found but that was no contrast and they said that just ruled out active bleeds and big tumours.

Asked receptionist and she suggested after 2 weeks phone them but didn't really appear to know. I know normally the longer you wait the more likely it is all clear. NHS online seems to say up to 2 weeks. If its bad news do they phone and does it happen quickly? Going to assume its good news. Has anyone been told not to go home alone and it was good / bad news. Checked online and 3 people told that all had tumours but I guess if you just had nothing you might feel silly mentioning it. Thanks very much.

Thanks - I don't think its that as the balance thing is permanent 24/7, the worst time is going from lying or seated to standing but its always there. Came on very suddenly about 2 years ago, same time as I started getting flu like symptoms every 2 weeks lasting a week. After about 9 months like that was given double antibiotics by hospital as they suspected pelvic infection from previous month's operation but then the flu like symptoms stopped. Balance never came back and its really bad, strangers ask me if I need help walking at times. I have always suspected Lyme as had insect bite and weird oval rash few weeks before symptoms started. Blood test for that has come back negative though that is a very unreliable blood test. Antibiotics hospital gave me are ones used to treat Lyme. They said my spots aren't MS too though seen cases were the MS is on the spine MRI and private doctor I saw before said she would suspect MS. Wish I could see her again with the report but can't work with my symptoms. Well a bit from home.

Online neurologist said he thinks its probably small vessel disease and see a neurologist for second opinion and to see why have it without the obvious risk factors. The A&E doctor said small strokes but said it was a bit of a guess. Those might be similar things though. Online doctor said to get B12 and homocysteine tested.

Will try and get a follow up with neurologist and see what they say.

My dizziness was 24/7 too and felt like I was always on a boat. I still have it now but it gets slightly better each year

PenguinsRabbits · 03/07/2019 20:16

Yes mine is quite like on a boat, a boat in a storm - I looked it up and closest I could find was waddling gait Grin. When I am actually in a boat I always collapse and cannot stand up in one, quite embarrassing. I hope it improves but not so far. Has been getting more stroke like past couple of months but not before other than brain going dead.

The A&E doctor said the white spots are very under-researched and medical knowledge in that area is poor but its very high risk for stroke.

My dh collapsed and was taken to hospital. When he came around he was confused. They gave him CT brain scan and revealed a growth. Released two day later and sent to larger hospital for MRI scan and referred to neurological consultant. His got neurological consultant appointment two weeks later and he consultant had received MRI scan at that point. dh is now having operation in September.

I have long-term balance issues and white matter 'spots'. It took me 16 years to get a diagnosis. I topple over to one side; others had noticed that I either walk with my left side right next to a wall or position myself leaning to the right, almost to over compensate (it doesn't work!!) I also have a "wide waddling gait". However, I have other troublesome symptoms too, which thankfully you haven't mentioned. I'm not suggesting that you may have the same diagnosis as me, more that I know how shit it can feel waiting to find out what is wrong.

I'm not prepared to discuss my diagnosis on an open forum but am happy to chat by private chat.

Thanks very much.

So sorry to hear about your DH Caring

Yummy I have lots of symptoms which came on quite suddenly 2 years ago. Was very fit, thin and healthy then started deteriorating quite rapidly. Thanks for offering to talk by PM, I'll send you a message. May not be same thing but interesting to see what might be.
