my dad has prostate cancer, and hates his current consultant, for reasons that I will detail in a later post. He is currently being treated at DOncaster, and is waiting for his CAT scan to see if it has spread to bones and all that. We would like his treatment to be transferred to weston park in sheffield, as it is a specialist cancer hospital. They are not going to ask for a transfer until after the scan as there have been some really appalling delays in his diagnosis already (for a later post too)

WHo should he ask for this to happen? WIll it delay treatment? Their GPs practice is a bit shite (may even now be run by private american company), can he ask the consultant to transfer him?

When should he ask?

HELP

sorry if long

What does he feel he wants to do?

TnOgu · 26/07/2007 00:08

< did that make sense? >

NormaStanleyFletcher · 26/07/2007 00:12

He doesn't want to stay with his current consultant.

He hates him with a passion and will make a formal complaint as soon as he is no longer under his care.

One of the foremost cancer hospitals in the country is quite close

They would rather go there (it might not be the one that the GP refers EVERYONE to, but it is the one that at CANCER patient should be at, but he wasn't a cancer patient when he was referred to the hospital he is at now iyswim?)

TnOgu · 26/07/2007 00:30

Fletch - I don't know what to advise.

I suppose you will have to fight hard for the best treatmentas quickly as possible.

God, I feel for you.

don't worry tnog -

Any post at all is welcome.

And you are right.

I guess I was just hoping that one of the gazillion on MNers would know the BEST (quickest) way to move who his going to see after the cat scan

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 26/07/2007 09:10

Fletch - I only have expereince of second opinions - not totally relevant but worth exploring - the best way to do that is through your GP. Find the name of the consultant at the new hospital and ask for a named referral to him. You are entitled to a second opinion. They could do this now - still wait for the scan at Doncaster and then transfer to Weston Park for his treatment.

Otherwise can they afford a private consultation with the specialist at Weston (if he does them)? Again your GP would have to refer but you could transfer to him under the NHS afterwards.

Hope he is doing OK.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 26/07/2007 11:01

Thanks for that - have to go off line now but will check their site in a bit

NormaStanleyFletcher · 26/07/2007 15:45

OK - I have found a the consultant on their website, so now I think he needs to get his GP to refer him. I suppose he could do that before the scan (since it will take a little bit of time)

NormaStanleyFletcher · 26/07/2007 22:31

OK - so the plan is to get the date for the cat scan and then call the GP, get an appointment for 2 days before and get re-referred, of go private to get on the list, but not all consultants take private so we will have to see......

NormaStanleyFletcher · 26/07/2007 22:35

I know that I am talking to myself by the way

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 26/07/2007 23:12

If it helps Fletch, talk away.

Glad you've got a plan at least. How long before the scan.

You could call the consultant's secretary at Weston Park. She'll know if he does private and she'll probably have his private secretary's number.

TnOgu · 27/07/2007 10:37

How is your dad doing, Fletch?

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 27/07/2007 10:43

Someone I know did this after some appalling treatment at their local hospital (not Doncaster). They found out the name of the consultant at Sheffield and rang his secretary direct and said they wanted to come to him. It was sorted out quickly and as far as I know treatment wasn't delayed.

Hope it gets sorted and that he gets betetr treatment.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 30/07/2007 08:05

Thank you all so much for your help and very helpful suggestions.

He has an appointment on Wednesday (we presume for a cat scan - he didn't ask when they rang - doh)

Mum is ringing to speak to the secretary at Weston Park today, to find out what they have to do to get moved.

Fingers crossed

NormaStanleyFletcher · 24/08/2007 21:04

For those of you who stayed with me and helped me on this thread I thank you.

He has had tests and tests and ... YAY... the cancer has not spread.....

He does not have to have surgery or chemo, just radiotherapy for 4 weeks as the starting point.

twocutedarlings · 24/08/2007 22:09

Really please for you fletch, just read you thread for this first time, i live in Sheffield and i have family that have had treatment at Weston park, i hope your fathers treatment goes really well.

Well Done you for pushing to get his treatment here, he is in the best place, they really know there stuff.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 25/08/2007 12:26

NormaStanleyFletcher · 25/08/2007 13:06

Loshad · 25/08/2007 23:40

good result - didn't see this earlier but think he will ne much better off at Sheffield. He's a typical yorkshireman then your dad?, hope he continues to get on ok.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 27/08/2007 22:53

He ain't from yorkshire (though he should have been!)

Weston park is where he is going. Who can argue with a specialist cancer hospital
