DS1 is 4.
Took DS1 to dentist (NHS) just b4 christmas and his teeth were fine. Took him back in June and they have found 2 teeth with holes in and they told me that they would need filling. Last week he was complaining about toothache, got him into the same NHS dentist today, dentist said that he has an absess and it will need removing. She has asked me to come back in 2 weeks and she will try to clean hole in the other tooth and poss fill it but will make a decision on whether to remove that too.
Feel very worried about general anethetic and why he cant just have fillings.
Am trying to get a second opnion..

It is ossible for children (a stainless steel crown rather than a gold or porcelain one) and isn't expensive, but there needs to be enough tooth left to attach the crown onto and if there is an abcess the ndead nerve will have to be removed.

DS hasnt had any x rays, I asked if he needed one to make sure he had an absess and she said no, and then started talking about something else.
Are any of you dentists??

CoV so why did I have to have the nerves taken out????? I was in agony apparantly when I have fillings done the stuff attaches the nerves - root treatment then the only option????

My crowns were done in part because there was not enough tooth left to refill, have beautiful crowns though on my front teeth - better than the originals!

ComeOVeneer is a dentist

he will get an initial appointment at hospital for x-rays and assessment and discussion .. the dentist just refers them on

I have told DS if they take tooth out at hospital then tooth fairy will give him £5 (normally gets £1 per tooth but this would be special)

if they cap it with a robot tooth then I'll give him £5

I've promised him he'll be asleep .. he doesn't like fingers in his mouth but is very brave at dentist .. big fat tears roll down his cheeks but he keeps his mouth open .. I couldn't put him through the trauma and risk him hating dentists if not asleep

Ga's nor sedations are not legally allowed to be carried out in general practice. There are special clinics that deal with sed/ga as they have on staff trained anaesthetists and all the necessary resuc. equiptment/training and experience. An xray is rarely needed forbaby teth to establish presence of an abcess (it is usually visably obvious).

we went to a specialist sedation clinic in watford, he had an injection and went to sleep it only took 15 minutes and he came around after about 10 minutes.

i just explained factually what they would do, he wasn't too worried as he knew the tooth hurt him. he wasn't even that groggy afterwards and ate his dinner as usual.

they were lovely at the clinic, really used to putting children at ease.

there were lots of children waiting for the same thing.

ComeOVeneer · 25/07/2007 18:15

Without knowing your dental history, nor seeing the actual teeth and/or xrays it would be inproper of me to say why your dentist opted to remove the nerves prior to doing the crowns.

ComeOVeneer · 25/07/2007 18:16

SEA I used to refer to the clinic in Watford (have had lots of good reports from ptients I sent there).

daisycat01 · 25/07/2007 18:19

Ok Thanks!

Feel much better now..have stopped crying!

I agree with the dentist, and I dont want him to be scared of the dentist in the future.
I will await what happens in 2 weeks when she is going to try to clean the other tooth.

Oh also..how long did it take/does it take, to get the operation?? Just thinking about school and stuff???

actually thinking about it the nerves were removed at 14 - I was in excrutiating pain both times (about 6 months apart) but they were then filed down and crowned about 8 years later - they were filled in the side and the back and I have slender teeth. When she then filed a tiny bit of a bottom tooth to sort out my bite I hit the roof with the pain and it was very sensitive for weeks.

so it was more a case of wondering how they can crown without filing the tooth at all? Does it just depend on if there is enough room around the tooth?

Sorry it just fascinates me, I currently have a fantastic dentist who at the first sign of problem happily xrays to make sure there is nothing nasty going on to try and save the few teeth I still have!

southeastastra · 25/07/2007 18:23

think we waited for about 2 weeks it didn't take long.

they were really lovely comeoveneer and made him laugh, i was quite surprised as he can over react to things he isn't sure of!

i know daisycat01 it made me really upset.

Thanks for all your help
