Has my mastitis turned into an abscess?

I lsaw the doctor at 2pm today who diagnosed me with mastitis, however there's now a lump in my breast underneath my nipple that's about the size of a 50p and feels like a ball underneath skin that moves when pressed. Is this now an abscess or perhaps just a result of being quite vigilant with a pump for the last four weeks? Really don't fancy going to A&E Sad

Go and get it checked. Does it hurt ?

kunderscorej · 21/06/2019 21:19

It could be a blocked duct, try using an electric toothbrush to massage towards the nipple, and getting baby to feed / expressing. Hot water compress may also help. If this doesn't work get back to docs. Did they give you antibiotics for mastitis?

How much pain are you in? My abscess was so sore that I couldn’t move my arm at all or out a bra on. The gp was dismissive but I ended up at a&e after seeing another (male, first was female) doctor and admitted for 2 days with IV antibiotics and they then did a drain. Don’t leave it if you have any concerns.

Hurts to touch but not to move arm.

Is it red?

Toli · 21/06/2019 21:36

The lump is in the areola so it's the same colour as that.

Do you have a walk in centre near you? My abscess was much deeper in my breast so you may have nipple pain/bruising if you have been pumping an awful lot. With the infection from the abscess I also felt really ill. Sorry I don’t have better advice but if you are concerned see someone as you don’t want to be ill with a little one.

bobstersmum · 21/06/2019 21:42

Get in a really hot bath and massage it firmly from behind it towards the nipple for a good five mins or so, it should start to budge, you can put a hot water bottle on it and then massage as well. If it is just mastitis then it should start to clear, and ibuprofen is really good too.

Haggisfish · 21/06/2019 21:43

I put ibuprofen gel directly on boob and fed in warm bath to get rid of mine. Pumping made mine much wore and actually caused a few blocked ducts for me

Toli · 21/06/2019 21:44

Have done the bath already, no milk came out though Sad

No walk in centre, A&E half an hour drive away so don't want to go if it's nothing.

Can you squeeze?? I had something similar and it felt much better after a whole load of gunk came out?

Dangermouse80 · 21/06/2019 21:50

Hopefully it should start to move soon. Need to massage really vigorously whilst in the bath under the water. Try all different angles. In the past I couldn't at first get any milk to flow but a second bath a few hours later did the trick. I had to ditch the pumping as for me that just triggered mastitis.

Darayan20 · 21/06/2019 22:01

I had the same thing with fever body aches the gp. Gave me antibiotics I hot bottles can help or a hot towel I know how painful it is you can't even move your arm but try to massage ThanksThanksThanks

Angelika321 · 21/06/2019 22:05

When I had a blocked duct I took pain killers and used a hot water bottle on the lump, then got my husband to massage out the lump. It hurt like a bastard but it did the trick.
