Peripheral vision loss

Just looking for advice. My DH has been told he has peripheral vision loss following a freak accident when he fractured his skull five weeks ago. He's been told that the vision is unlikely to return because of the part of the skull which was fractured.
Anyone else ever had this loss. Doesn't look like there is an easy remedy. Someone mentioned re training the brain but not sure how we would go about this. Its such a pity as he loves catching up with newspapers and books etc.

Why couldn’t he read books and newspapers , you don’t need peripheral vision to read.

As the PP said you use your central vision for reading rather than peripheral. Peripheral vision is the outer part of the visual field, so it's important for driving, sports, navigating when walking around among other things.

It's possible though that your DH has another problem that's causing close vision to be difficult and this could still resolve. There may still be some residual swelling from the original injury, which will get better with time. Also eyes do adapt, often people who has damaged one of their eyes and have a lazy second eye, can learn to use the lazy eye - although it takes 6 months or so.

Is he due to go and see ophthalmology again?
