Athletes Foot and Fungal Nail - help!!

Poptart32 · 20/06/2019 08:20

I'm ashamed to say, I've had this problem for years. It's worsened over time and now a good portion of my foot is covered in itchy, breaking skin. My toe nails are brittle, and one is pretty much just a hardened lump. Blush

What do people recommended for sorting this out once and for all?

If it is that bad I’d not mess around with over the counter stuff, I’d go to a chiropodist or your GP for professional advice and treatment.

Terbinafine - pretty strong drug you can get from your GP

That is the only thing that fixed mine

I suffer from these frequently too! You can buy antifungal cream from the pharmacy for the athletes foot. Once mine was so bad it looked like something had been eating away all my skin!

As for the fungal nail, both of my bug toenails were recently so brittle that they eventually snapped in half, half way down my toe. Was so uncomfortable for weeks! I bought some scholl nail treatment where you have to file the nail then apply a varnish. It has totally cleared it up now! I contemplated going to the doctors and getting a prescription but it's such a faff as they ask you to provide nail clippings to be sent off to a lab before they give you anything for it.

It’s because the tablet treatment that GP’s can prescribe for it is quite high risk for the liver, whatisit and you have to take the pills for months and months. They don’t want to just hand out the medication willy-nilly.

I had issues with fungal nail on one big toe for YEARS! Did all the over the count stuff (plus a few weird internet remedies) but it didn't work and got worse. In the end I went to the GP who sent off clippings and eventually got prescribed the tablets that have been mentioned above - also had to have regular blood tests done but had several of the grim side effects - so in the end I only took them for about 3 months but they made me feel really ill but it must have been just enough to do something because healthily nail started to grow through - it took another 6months but my nails are now completely clear!!

Twins ah ok I didn't realise that they could give you tablets for it, i assumed they Would just give you a topical application for it.

The scholl treatment worked well for me but is a bit pricey. Think I was around £20 for it but was worth it

Lamisil for the athlete's foot works well for me - but it could take a while since you've had it so long.

The fungal nail treatments are costly and I have had limited success with them. The best one for me was Curanail Loceryl which I got online and it cost me about £25. New nail is growing nicely now and I heard that tea tree oil can keep fungus at bay so I rub that on my toenails every morning. So far so good.

I have considered the tablets but decided my liver is more important to me than my toenails.

I let mine get into a mess and ignored the problem until I couldnt stand it.
I went to the docs and had tablets for several months, one round of steroid cream plus used a greasy emollient on my feet. I know have a professional chirpodist appointment once every 3 months and file and moisturize. I have happy feet now!

I have a fungal nail infection that’s older than my ds!
First appeared when I was pregnant, so couldn’t treat it until after I finished breastfeeding- so it was really well established.
Tried otc stuff, waste of time, the fungus just laughed at me.
Tablets from doctor cleared it, but it came back straightaway
Second round of tablets - same
Chiropodist removed nail and laser treatment over three months (at £500 😮) - cleared it but guess what, it came back straightaway.
I’ve decided to give up and treat it as part of the family, unless anyone can suggest an amazing cure I’ve not tried yet!

I have had good success with Vicks for fungal toe nails. Rub it into the nail and surrounding skin morning and night

Daygals · 20/06/2019 18:50

For me, the Vicks worked better than the over the counter antifungal stuff that costs £€£
