ds1 has woken up coughing and coughing, and he has the visible sucking-in at the stirnum and throat thing ('tracheal tug'??)

He had a night in hospital with oxygen/steroids etc a few months ago following a virus, and they sent us home with inhalor/spacer, but we haven't had to use them since.

But he is coughing and coughing (dry cough) and has that sort of breathy sound in his voice.

What should I do? Dh has just given him 10 puffs on the inhalor and it's helped a bit, but still has the tracheal tug thing.

that is appalling greeny. my gp fobbed me off twice when dd was wheezing. i had the opposite, i dialled 999 and they came straight out. her sats were 87, she looked awful and she spent the night on oxygen in a tube through her nose and 3 days in the childrens ward. going with your instincts is definetly best

Twiglett · 25/07/2007 12:26

well done greeny

NorbertStanleyFletcher · 25/07/2007 12:33

Feckin 'ell what crap advice you got from the paramedics - well done you for keeping going (how's the pain btw?)

Well done for making a complaint too.

greensleeves · 25/07/2007 12:57

greyhairs that is horrific about your sister

He's sounding pretty horrible again now. I really, really hope I don't have to do it all again this afternoon.

And NSF, thanks for asking the pain is better, but not gone. I could do with an extra 24 hours sleep really

IME they do get worse late afternoon and evening...

Countingthegreyhairs · 25/07/2007 14:12

sorry to hear yr ds1 still feeling rotten Greensleeves, must be so stressful for you and him. Hope all goes well this evening/tonight.

SlightlyMadSpider · 25/07/2007 14:23

Greeny - I can soo see why you are angry.

If you do feel he needs to be seen this afternoon - try ringing and ask to speak directly to a GP without taking him dowm there. He may be able to sort out a passport to the hospital over the phone without being seen as this mornings episode will be in his notes. That is what I was recommended when DD3 had a menigitis type rash which GP was happy with - but gave me the option to phone him for a "GP referral" to bypass A&E should there have been any developments.

thebecster · 25/07/2007 14:34

I'd definitely second SlightlyMadSpider - if your GP calls the hospital he'll be expected & they'll have to get you there & get him seen. I'm so very on your behalf that the paramedics didn't take you seriously. But your DS sounds a bit like mine - ie. he is asthmatic & prone to bronchitis/bronchiolitis etc., but he carries on running around & talking even when he can hardly breathe. So often the doctor has said 'Well I can see there's not much wrong with this little chap' when DS runs into his room, then listens to his chest and says 'Oh, that doesn't sound so good...' But we know when they're really ill, don't we? Well done for sticking to your guns.

greensleeves · 25/07/2007 15:11

that's exactly it becster, he was chatting like his normal self, only I could hear his breath catching, his words kept fading out. My gp knows him, so he knew immediately he wasn't right.

Spider, thanks for that, if he gets worse I will try phoning rather than rushing down there.

greeny, when I shoved (!) dd2 into the car she was trying to talk to me but just sort of wheezed - the air literally couldn't get out. it was v scary and i think you are absolutely right to take this very seriously.xxx

greensleeves · 25/07/2007 16:26

Thank god for MN, I sort of felt I had 'authority' behind me in saying "no, I'm not happy, I'm getting him checked anyway thank you". Is that sad? I'm sad

he is stil breathy and wheezy now after 4 and then 3 puffs of salbutamol, so I may yet end up in A&E - fingers crossed not though.

25 days ?? what if another child has the same thing and they don't go0 to GP anyway because paraemdics say they were making it up?

greensleeves · 25/07/2007 16:40

I know MOM, it's crap isn't it? The thing is (now I've clamed down) the paramedic was very nice and friendly and seemed very in control - she seemed extremely confident and happy with his condition. I was the one left feeling small and ill-informed and like the "overanxious mother". If it hadn't been for the little voice in my head that niggled, and my stubborn determination that I was right, I probably would have left it and let him go upstairs to sleep. Without wishing to whip up drama, it could have been really bad.

I might ring my gp tomorrow morning (before he gets deluged with patients) and ask him whether he thinks he could get it looked at a bit sooner.

LilRedWG · 25/07/2007 17:19

Well done for making an official complaint!

greensleeves · 25/07/2007 17:38

Cheers, he is tucking into his dinner and flinging ketchup at his brother now, I assume that's a good sign
