Am i being silly?

Hello everyone,

My baby is coming up to one very soon and i know the MMR injection will be coming up shortly, normally I wouldn't think twice about it and absolutely have it done.

My dh is partially deaf and my MIL reckons it was the MMR that caused this although this has never or will ever be proven. She says she had kept diary's from this time and its when it was noticed and he changed as a baby and he passed all hearing tests before. My MIL didn't vaccinate her following baby because of this.

Am i silly to think about getting baby the injections separately? Guess i just need some reassurance that if i do just go ahead with the MMR I'm not risking baby's hearing? Confused confused mama!

Thank you x

I'd advise you to speak to your GP.

Fears without foundation are, by nature, unreasonable.

cherryblossomgin · 13/06/2019 10:58

There has been 9 reports of hearing loss caused by the MMR. Its rare but it can happen. You aren't being silly to have a concern but the risk of not giving your child the vaccination are worse. If you don't vaccinate your child may catch measles or rubella. These are now on the rise due to parents not vaccinating their children.

You cannot get the vaccinations separately. Get your baby vaccinated.

Jaymee812 · 13/06/2019 11:21

Thank you, I 100% want her vaccinated I was more concerned if having them done separately would still have the same risks as having them combined but I didn't put that across very clearly, sorry. I didn't realise the injections weren't available separately at all as last week my health visitor advised me i could get them done privately. Confused

Why put your baby through 3 separate needles !?
It's horrible enough having them for them but necessary
I'd rather the combined...
My dd is 3 yrs and due her MMR booster this month I haven't thought twice about it
It's just something that has to be done

scaevola · 13/06/2019 18:49

I don't think mumps vaccine is currently available singly.

Effect on hearing is an incredibly rare side effect, and indeed is unproven as there have only been about 9 reported cases (and just compare that to the hundreds of thousands who get the jab) and it's not proven that the jab was causative. Those DC all had a severe reaction to the jab (encephalitis).

Encephalitis is very rare following the jab, much more common from the disease 1:1000, with 1:25000 having the invariably fatal SSPE, it's the most common neurological complication of having measles.

My hearing started to deteriorate after having MMR. It's very rare though and that was in the 90s. I'm sure the risks are very, very low now.

fatfluffycushion · 14/06/2019 10:05

I had measles as a child and my sight and hearing started to deteriorate after

Jaymee812 · 14/06/2019 20:58

Thanks guys! I didn't realise they weren't available as separate injections so she will have the combined one when the time comes, but if having 3 separate injections would give her any less of a risk in loosing her hearing for life, of course i would rather she had the 3 injections, either way she would be vaccinated Smile
