Just found out DD1 has nits, DS said he had an itchy head in the car on the way to school today so almost certainly has them. Its the last day of school tomorrow, will he have to miss it?

God yes. Most parents I talk to almost expect their kids to have nits at this point and make the effort to get them cleared over the summer holidays.

I would have absolutely no qualms about sending him. Where to you think he got them from after all?

MamaG · 24/07/2007 12:24

Can't you give him a comb through tonight? If you wash his hair, leave tea tree conditioner on and then comb out, he'll be nit free? More for his comfort than a nything

clutteredup · 24/07/2007 12:30

Thanks. We've managed to avoid them up to now so I'm a nit virgin I'll try and sort them tonight, i've been through dd's and pulled out the ones i can find so far. where do you get tea tree oil from?

PestoMonster · 24/07/2007 12:32

Any chemist sells it or supermarket pharmacy should have it.

Spidermama · 24/07/2007 12:33

You get it from the health food shop. I wouldn't bother though. I would either wet comb it with conditioner to get the crawlers out (but you won't get the eggs) or do it with hedrin which kills them. Even with Hedrin you'll still need to do it again in ten days. With wet combing alone you need to do it every three days or so for about a fortnight.

Spidermama · 24/07/2007 12:33

I love tea tree oil but I've never noticed it's efficacy in getting rid of nits. It's great for all sorts of other things but IMO it's water off a nit's back.

MamaG · 24/07/2007 12:34

oh a nit virgin!

I'm Queen of nits so here are my top tips.

  1. Get a nitty gritty comb (£10 off the tinternet) or a bug busting kit (free on prescription from docs) - both good combs.

  2. Bath kid - wash with Tea tree shampoo (available everywhere) then rinse and put on LOADS of TT conditioner. Leave it on as long as poss while they play/ wash /whatever.

  3. Take kid out, wrap in towel, sit on knee and comb comb comb. If long hair, do it in sections, wiping the nits on a tissue/babywipe as you go. Go over and over the same sections, in different directions until you aren't getting any more.

  4. Rinse child's hair and then comb again (i know, but its the only way).

  5. Do it every other day and they'll be gone in a fortnight.

Good luck! Combing tonight, even with a basic nit comb from teh chemist, will get rid of the live ones. Phone GP and ask for a prescription for the bug busting kit, may as well as its free

Quick Q how do you get the eggs out of the nitty gritty comb, they seem to get lodged in mine?

Spidermama · 24/07/2007 12:36

MamaG if I did that with all four of mine they'd have no time for school, dinner or anything else.

Whilst I'm sure that works, and I have no wish to usurp your title, Hedrin applied twice works even without combing.

Spidermama · 24/07/2007 12:36

Cagirl I burn them out now and again.

MamaG · 24/07/2007 12:38

Really spidy? I've only got DD to do, but hedrin didn't work for me - it did get rid of the live ones but even doing it 10 days later didn't work.

Glad it did for you though, i can imagine it would be anighmare doing 4

CarGirl · 24/07/2007 12:39

Have to say I always use something rather than just rely on combing my hair is too thick for me to get rid of them combing alone!

CarGirl · 24/07/2007 12:40

need to do it 7 days later not 10!!!! I'm going to dd4 every 3/4 days for 2 weeks as she won't sit still to let me comb properly! I want RID of them!

MamaG · 24/07/2007 12:42

They're a bloody nightmare

DD gets them every single time they hit school

clutteredup · 24/07/2007 12:45

OMG, thanks for all the advice. What a b*y faff. just at the end of term and all that. I s'pose i should just be grateful i've never had to do it before. do babies get them too? DD2 6 mo and they all 3 of them put their hair into into eachother's faces. What about hairbrushes and towels and bed clothes? I suppose they all need to be treated?? HOW ?????? BR

OP posts:
MamaG · 24/07/2007 12:46

clutteredup don't panic! I assume your baby will have very fine hair and you can check it?

Try hedrin, it does get rid of the live ones, its the bloody bastard eggs.

Just wash hairburshes/towels/bedding etc and make sure that after the hedrin has been washed out, they sleep on clean pillowcases.

The combers dont advise every othe day BTW, but I found that was the only way to be sure I got all the fuckers.

MamaG · 24/07/2007 12:46

and DON'T try any other lotions and potions, trust me they don't work

PestoMonster · 24/07/2007 12:47

Don't forget yourself and your dp's and any other relatives that your dcs regularly come into contact with.

MamaG · 24/07/2007 12:48

yy

Wisteria · 24/07/2007 12:51

The only thing which I recommend is the robi-comb (electrocutes the little bleeders) which also neutralises the eggs. We comb as soon as get back from school, every night and morning before school when they're around.
Don't tell the school you've got them but be vigilant and definitely send them in as the kids who are spreading them have parents who don't care anyway so it's all pointless IME.

CarGirl · 24/07/2007 12:56

If one of them is infested it is worth using something once just to kill them and get rid of the first onslought - otherwise they run around and can be hard to get out! I do agree lotions alone are not enough you need a nitty gritty and do the combing too.

clutteredup · 24/07/2007 21:20

Thank you for the help. i put some heavy chemical on to try and kill the little buggers and then spent over an hour combing through both dcs hair. can't believe ds he had thousands, didn't get them all out butnot as many as there were. i told the teacher and she didn't tell me to keep him off school so last day tomorrow as planned...now I'vegot the holidays full of nit combing to lokk forward to oh jolly jolyy time
