Nerve pain following injury

About 6 weeks ago I injured my knee, it looks like it is a torn meniscus. I'm just about off of crutches now, but the nerve pain shooting down my leg into my ankle and foot is unbearable. I was prescribed 20mg of amitriptyline which takes the edge off of it, but am still struggling. I can't increase the dose as already taking sertraline and would be at risk of serotonin syndrome. Has anyone any experience of nerve pain and can suggest what has worked for them? I am being seen by the orthopaedic surgeon next week, but want to have an idea of what I should be asking for? I am taking naproxen too, but to be honest I don't think this helps. Has anyone tried gabapentin or similar? Thank you!

My ED hurt a joint at school, which resulted in CRPS. I know not all nerve pain can end up like this, but make sure you keep touching the area a lot. She didn't and now even a breeze hurts.

I hope you find a solution for your pain.

Thanks for the advice longtompot . I just looked up CRPS, sounds terrible. I hope your daughter has found a way to manage the condition.

It is terrible. She has had it 10 years now, since she was 12. She manages it with Tramadol, which doesn't take the pain away.
She's not let it stop her, she's just finished an art degree.

Hi, I have pretty bad nerve pain in my leg following surgery to my spinal cord. I have tried pretty much all of the drugs which work for nerve pain, and have settled on pregabalin (works very similar to gabapentin) and duloxetine, though I think the duloxetine would be unsuitable for you as it is an SNRI so affects seratonin.

You can also get lidocaine patches (Versatis) which are good, but only if the area affected is quite small (a calf would probably be fine). There is also nortriptyline in the same class as amitriptyline, which you could find more effective at the same dose, and tends to have fewer side effects.

Your orthopaedic surgeon may have some other ideas too. And hopefully you will heal quickly

Thanks both. Turns out the knee is fractured so hopefully will be able to get things moving forward now!
