Antibiotics - do others feel DC are prescribed them too often?

My 8mo DS has just been prescribed his 5th course in 4 months. Previously they have been prescribed for 2 chest infections, bronchialitus, tonsilitus and now a throat infection that has gone to an ear infection.

I really don't like the fact that he has been given so many, as on this basis no wonder all the bugs will be resistant in a few years. And I don't know what it is doing to DS. Then again, I don't want DS to suffer, and when he is ill he hardly eats anything.

Docs also say that I should be more ready to give DS Calpol when he is grizzly - for whatever reason. I try to get away with giving him the minimum dose and only when he really needs it.

What do other people think/do?

I don't know. I always hope that the doctors know their job and prescribe them when really needed.
I sued to be like you re Calpol when the children were younger. Now I'm a bit more liberal with it

try a course of acidofolus after the antibiotics it puts the good bacteria back and helps fight the next bug he may get!!! can probably get it from holland and barret but check with his age!!!

my ds it taking it now he was only half was through the course and got a cold that went away as quick as it appeared!!!

since i had it i've hardly been ill too!!!

I see what you mean, jaz2. I've always avoided antibiotics (but I admit I've been lucky). I'm now at the ripe old age of 42 and have never been prescribed them.

Different health authorities probably take different approaches these days. Where I live, they are very reluctant to prescribe anti-biotics to anyone, and have been for several years.

Martini's idea sounds rather good!

Hmm, I'll give the acidofolus a go, good idea.
I've already started him on something that is supposed to be good bacteria for babies (and at the price it was I expect it to perform miracles), and will try to work out whether it is any different from the acidofolus. I suppose I ought to stop giving it to him while he is on the medicine, otherwise who knows what impact the combined conconction will have!
