Jelonet or Hydrocolloid dressing best for burns

I've got a nasty scald on my foot from about a week agin. First it was dressed with Jelonet and then I have got Hydrocolloid dressings - which is best do you think? the nurse did it yesterday (again with Jelonet) but said could use mine if I wanted to change it in the weekend before the next appt. Many thanks.

Jelonet, hydrocolloid will just make it damp and soggy

TwattingDog · 09/06/2019 01:09

Jelonet. Definitely.

Hydrocolloid got stuck to my arm and made things much worse when it had to be ripped off...

Interesting- when I searched on here mainly got the feeling Jelonet was out of date nowadays and hydrocolloid better.

I don't have any of the Jelonet but will be getting it re-dressed at the GP tomorrow so might keep that on then, as I do feel maybe it is getting soggy with the Hydrocolloid.

The nurse told me they don't use it on older people due to the sticking problem, but with me that should be OK.

I was only 34! I burned my arm on my motorbike exhaust, about the size of a large thumb. Hydrocolloid was a bad idea as it took the healing skin off when the dressing failed. Jelonet is less likely fail in my view! I keep some in the first aid kit all the time.

I would also do for jellonet, or maybe atruman you can get it.

I suffered bad burns recently and one area took five months to heal so I tried a lot of dressings in that time! The hydrocolloid made things too wet, and it didn’t heal. In the end the most stubborn bit was dressed with a mepore dressing and it finally healed!

OK, I am struggling a bit with the hydrocolloid sticking and being tricky to change...going back to have it changed later. They will probably use the jelonet again and thinking maybe that will be enough to heal it. Or they will change it again with that- see what they say. Thanks

Can i also ask do people tend to put any would gel on these or just clean with a mediwipe? Anything else good for putting on them? or just letting it heal. Thanks

Just back from the nurse at GPs- they put a mepore type patch on it, and have ordered some more online. They thought the hydrocolloid one was healing it OK though. I was finding the pulling on it a bit tricky after a while.

A pic would help. But my advice (nurse practitioner) don't use any creams or wipes or antiseptics on it. I'm assuming that if they have out a mepore on its reasonably dry? Once it's healed over you can moisturise to reduce scarring but difficult to advise without seeing it

Not very good with pics but it is a week on and starting to heal- new skin and gone from being red to looking pink. Still very painful though.

Thanks for the replies.

I haven’t used Jelonet for years, it’s really not ideal. We use Mepitel or Atrauman.

I wouldn’t use a hydrocolloid on a burn either, it would leave it rather soggy.

No need for creams etc - just clean with water (or saline), then cover. As they dry out just emollient to reduce scabbing and scarring.

user87382294757 · 11/06/2019 08:49

Ok thanks, well they have advised just to keep this one on until Thursday when they will change it again (hopefully that is the last appt.)

Mepore was the dressing I used, but I used to open a small jelonet and use some of the oil in them on burn as I found them a bit dry, even though they were the best dressing.
Once healed I moisturised with E45.

Yes, I see what you mean. I had to take it off as it was a bit dry- it is healing quite well though apart from that and am now trying Boots burns plasters for the two main areas. Final change tomorrow- NHS has been very good for helping with this, am very grateful as I get quite anxious at times. Especially after this. Will be very wary of hot drinks now.
