Concern over dodgy bottle of Calpol

Hi Everyone, First time I've ever posted on MumsNet so please go easy on me as this might be a daft question!!! Blush
I went to give DS a dose of Calpol last month and noticed that the top of the bottle had sort of crystals inside on top of the liquid. They looked a bit like sugar/salt crystals, (although it was sugar-free Calpol). I emailed Calpol to ask if this was normal as I'd never seen this before. They asked me to send the bottle to them for testing.
They sent me an apology letter and some vouchers to cover the cost, but I replied to say I wanted to know what the crystals in the Calpol were, and could they explain if this was a normal reaction for this medicine. I realise it's a suspension, but I've never seen grains form in it. The woman I spoke to said she'd never heard anyone ask about this before, but the bottle had been tested and there was a report she could get sent to me.
Then it all got a bit weird. They are now saying they can't send me the report on the testing yet as it's not available (when I was told that it was available 2 weeks ago) , and they won't give me any information.
I have no idea why Johnson & Johnson are being so cagey and won't simply tell me if these crystals normally form in the bottle.
Can someone please tell me if I'm over-reacting and crystals often form in Calpol and I've just never noticed, or are Johnson and Johnson just not telling me something??
(Clearly I didn't give him the Calpol that night, I gave him a supermarket brand one I also had, but he'd had nearly half the bottle previously so I'm really concerned that I fed him a dodgy bottle).
Any help would be appreciated!

I've seen them. I think it's just the paracetamol setting so to say. Ive seen it on ibrophin bottles too. Maybe kid wasnt closed correctly?

Lid* 😂

danni0509 · 04/06/2019 22:19

Ds medicine will do this, it's just dried up crusty calpol if you've not wiped around the top before you put the lid back on it drys and ends up like you said.

OddCat · 04/06/2019 22:20

I've had this too on bottles that I've had for a while.

youlemming · 04/06/2019 22:20

I think it's just something that happens over time, I've seen it on many brands over the years both the known ones just as calpol and nurafen as well as supermarket own.

As long as its in date and within the time frame of use within x days/months once open I've used it even if its started to crystallise on the lid.

I expect rather than the crystals forming on the liquid it's fallen off the lid while you're unscrewing it.

I have seen crystals in our calpol before... now worried that I should have been more concerned and not given it to DD BlushConfused

freshstartnewme · 04/06/2019 22:20

Really common thing

PotteringAlong · 04/06/2019 22:22

I thought it was normal for it to do this!

ThisIsBonIver · 04/06/2019 22:23

That is totally normal on an opened bottle with drips left round the top. A brand new bottle that has not been opened shouldn’t have it though, so they may be more concerned about a poor seal.

NannyR · 04/06/2019 22:26

I've seen this happen in lots of bottles over the years but it's never occurred to me that it's something to worry about. I just thought it was what happened to bottles of thick, sticky liquid when they've been opened.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 04/06/2019 22:30

It's a completely normal thing.
