I don't know about cold, I found normal temp room and a bit of steam helped. Even putting dishes of wter on the heaters (if on). Dry atmospheres make it worse.

If it does get bad don't hesitate to go to A&E, 2 mins with the nebuliser and they are fine. Mine have grown out of it now.

NHS still recommends warm steamyness and avoid painkillers that can make them drowsy.

katelyle · 22/07/2007 22:28

When my dd had croup, our gp recommended sitting in the bathroom with the door closed and the shower on full blast to make a nice steamy atmosphere. She also recommended lots of iced drinks, ice lollies and ice cream to reduce the swelling of the broncheo things that I can't spell. Dd loved that bit, and tried to claim medicinal ice lollies for months afterwards!

A drop of olbas oil in the steam is comforting, but only a drop.

Keep her upright - for two nights, I propped myself up on lots of pillows and dd slept on me.

It's horrible - but it doesn't last long. Really feel for you - it's bringing back memories!

onehackedoffmuma · 22/07/2007 22:44

Gosh I remember when my little one had croup, it was so frightening. I really feel for you.

DS has always been prone to chest problems and he has asthma.

We were told the same by our hospital, sit him in a steamy bathroom.

I was so worried ended up having him in the bed with me.

LongDeadMotherofHarryP · 22/07/2007 22:48

IME keeping the child calm is very important. They get panicky which exacerbates the breathing trouble. So lots of warm body contact and soothing sounds from Mummy. I found putting mine to sleep in the car seat next to my bed was good too as it kept them upright.

Whooosh · 22/07/2007 22:52

Oh thank you so much all of you for the advice-it really is horrible.
Have taken veg steamer up to bathroom with extension cord and am damping towels as we speak.
Intersting about the painkillers-have dosed her all day on nurofen as is getting back teeth and gave her medised before bed-now thinking I have done the wrong thing [worried emoticon].

spk to a homeopath - but as soon as the attack starts i use ACONITE - followed by HEPAR SULPH - followed by SPONGIA. All of mine are 200c strength.

go and see a homeopath though - although these are commonly used - im not a homeopath.

my ds's attacks after using these go in 10mins - no signs of s cough or any probs the followng day/days either. which is bliss for him and me.

Whooosh · 22/07/2007 23:23

Thanks for that-SIL is a homeopath and whilst currently underwater wil I am sure, help.

you haven't done the wrong thing-ibuprofen is a really good thing to give as it helps reduce the inflammation in the throat.

if the stridor which is the noise they make when the breathe in is very audible-and it's not just when they cough-then take her to a &e. the nurse at the hospital said that once they start making that noise breathing in then their throat 'space' iyl, is reduced by 75% and they really need attention.

ds1 was hospitalised for 3 days with it a year or 2 ago and ds2 has been in as well.
liquid steroids help as does a nebuliser.

katelyle · 22/07/2007 23:49

Don't forget the ice lollies and the iced drinks - they really helped. Have a glass of iced water handy all the time for dd to sip.
Thinking about you as the night wears on!

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 23/07/2007 08:33

how didit go last night whoosh?
thinking of you.

Whooosh · 23/07/2007 14:22

Thank you all-last night wasn't too bad-but I was up a few times. The noise is pretty bad when she just breathes so if still as bad tonight,we may be off to A&E.

She has now developed the snottiest cold in history to go on top.

At the moment-just keeping her topped up with calpol and nurofen but her breathing is very laboured....

SIL un-reacheable due to floods....

I've found buying a humidifier very useful (from Argos), as can leave it on all night and make the room moist before she goes to bed (i.e. goes some way to avert the attack). I know there are issues that they can harbour bacteria, but mine gave very clear instructions on cleaning etc to avoid this. Just didn't find I could get enough steam any other way.

Whooosh · 23/07/2007 14:47

That's interesting Diplodocus-I put my veg steamer in the bathroom half an hour before she got up this morning, and ran a full bath and sink of hot water snd have to say it really didn't make much difference-I couldn't get her close enough to the steam without scaring her-she know steam means hot-so much for teaching them danger at an early age....

Off to Argos methinks.

Hi wooosh- I spent the night in hospital last night with ds whos 2.6 with croup so I know how you feel.

Today he's much better but he's shattered.
I've got to go straight back tonight if it gets any worse.

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 23/07/2007 17:16

whoosh if her breathing is laboured, just take her to a &e. they will be completely understanding and can relieve her suffering so quickly and easily.

really, if her breathing is laboured and the steam isn't working then go.

Whooosh · 23/07/2007 19:21

Have put her to bed with new-fangled humidifier but thanks to your advice-will limit my wine intake tonight and if needs be-whizz her straight off to a&e.
Saw my GP today, and depite the "one appointment, one problem" rule-asked about dd and she said night 2 or three was usualy the worst.Roll on tonight thinks I.

Thank you all for you radvice.

Roskva · 23/07/2007 19:27

I took dd to hospital with croup a couple of weeks ago. They told me it tends to get worse around dawn, which it did, and so kept her in overnight (well, for the rest of the night, it was 2.30am when she was admitted) so they could treat her quickly when it got bad.

I hope your lo is getting better.

Whooosh · 23/07/2007 21:29

Well so far,so good-vapouriser working so far.Not countingmy chickens thoug-let's see what happens at 2am [worried anticipation emoticon]
