Hysteroscopy to remove polyp.... but polyp disappeared?!

Hello all,

I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and can put my mind at rest!

I've had irregular periods since Aug 18 and after blood test and an ultrasound, a uterine polyp was found in early Oct 18. I was referred to a gynaecologist for surgery to remove the polyp and surgery was booked for yesterday, 3rd June. I also had another internal ultrasound scan in April 19 where I saw the polyp on the screen.

Yesterday I had a hyteroscopy under GA to remove the polyp, however when I came around after the GA the consultant told me there was no polyp to remove. I then didn't see him again before I was discharged from hospital but I did receive a letter as part of my discharge paperwork which says there was no polyp so I definitely didn't mis-understand whilst under the effects of GA!

I now feel totally at a loss as to what happened, can a polyp disappear on it's own? One of the nurses said it is possible that a polyp can retreat back into the lining of the endometrium which worries me more as does that now mean I'm playing a waiting game for it to reappear? And could it be possible that a polyp is missed whilst having a hysteroscopy? I really wouldn't have thought that would be possible but am so worried now.

I'm disappointed that I may have had surgery that I didn't need, although I know hyteroscopy procedures can improve periods on their own and I'm hoping time will tell on that. The consultant gynaecologist has said I don't need to go back for any follow ups so I don't think I'll have the opportunity to ask these questions to him.

If anyone has had a similar experience it would be great to hear from you as I've tried looking online for info but can't find anything on polyps going away on their own.

Thanks so much in advance to anyone who can help.

Hi Op, I was told I had a polyp at a smear test. When I went back it had disappeared so no idea what happened!

Kind of similar experience. I had an internal scan which identified endometrial polyp so was sent for hysteroscopy under GA. Consultant said he hadn't visualised the polyp but sent curettage?? off to lab for analysis
the sample contained a polyp which was non-malignant so from that he deduced it must have just been too small to visualise but was captured in the sample/biopsy sent to the lab.
