Hi, just hoping someone can help to ease my worries, I have just booked a smear, after about 10 years. I know i have been really stupid not to have gone sooner but things have been quite hectic over the past few years. I spent many years looking after my dad who had Multiple Sclerosis and my kids and then i fell pg 5 years ago and meant to get my smear done after the birth but i suffered from PND and then my dad died. I have since had a little boy who is 6 months old and have decided that i have to make the time to get this done, but i'm absolutely petrified that after all these years that i'm almost definately going to get a bad result. I'm just wondering if there are any tohers that have waited a long time between smears and had a normal result. I'm just so scared and don't know how i'm going to get through the next few weeks. My smear is on Tuesday.

Thanks in advance for any replies,

Tracey.

you must be brave and go - it isn't nice and I hate going and get in such a state but I do make myself - can't say anything that will be of comfort, apart from it's over in a trice and it could save your life !

McDreamy · 22/07/2007 17:40

Mary's right you must go. You'll feel so proud of yourself once you've done it

Mercy · 22/07/2007 17:40

Don't worry!

I had a about an 8 year gap between mine (had one last year) and all was normal. The nurse was very quick and I didn't feel a thing.

I think the cancer cells can sometimes take up to 20 years to grow. The chances are that you will be fine, so try not to worry. Think of this visit like wiping the slate clean and you can go more often in future

MaryAnnSingleton · 22/07/2007 17:44

we'll be thinking of you - keep posting for encouragement - you'll feel so relieved when you've done it !

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 22/07/2007 17:46

i was about 18 years between mine? felt exactly like you-too terrified to go ahead. finally plucked up the courage and went and it was fine!!! absolutely fine! and much less frightening than all the worrying i'd been doing. felt like i had had a big weight lifted aoof my shoulders!]

go!¬ i promise it won't be any worse than what you are feeling now!

Just want to say thanks to everyone who replied to my post, it really helps to hear that there are others who've been overdue for there smears and still had a good result. I have been having horrible thoughts of cancer raging through my body and getting myself really worked up. I know this is my own fault but that only makes me feel worse, i have 5 children and really need to be here for them. Not looking forward to Tuesday but will be glad when its over and done with, i'll keep you updated as soon as i get my results back.

Thanks again

Tracey.

dayofftomorrow · 24/07/2007 13:43

smears are more time critical in younger women,

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 24/07/2007 13:51

well i'm 35 now.

yes-completely normal!

dayofftomorrow · 24/07/2007 13:54

some areas do 3 yearly up to a certain age then on to 5 yearly then 10 yearly after 50

kaylasmum · 24/07/2007 22:23

Hi, thanks to you all for your replies, i've found them very helpful. Well i went for my smear this morning and the nurse was so nice, i explained to her how worried i was and she really helped to put my mind at rest. I burst into tears when i was talking to her, i felt so silly! It was all over so quickly and without a problem, now i just have to wait.

I'll let you know as soon as i get my results back. I'm just going to put it to the back of my mind and try not to obsess too much.

Tracey.

I had my first at the age of 27, a few months ago.

It was a cake walk, honeslt.NO pain, not even discomfort!

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/07/2007 09:43
