I thought this was down to lack of exercise but I have recently started an high intensity dance/aerobics class twice a week and feel loads better from that. However I wake up most mornings feeling like I've done ten rounds with mike Tyson through the night. Is it that I haven't given the exercise enough time or is there something wrong with me. I'm also getting headache and neck pain. I need a new bed frame I know but I'm waiting to move house. I'm also on sertraline so could it be that? Or is it my thyroid. I know I probably need to visit the doctor but just wanted to see if anyone could help.

hi Myuser

Those symptoms could be Vit D deficiency . As part of your investigation , I would ask for a blood level.

Here is thread with many people with Vit D deficiency, their symptoms, what they took, doses, how they felt etc. I posted quite a bit there to explain vit d actions.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/general_health/2421492-Vitimin-D-can-it-have-this-effect

Obviously there may be other , or additional reasons for your symptoms , eg, thyroid, lack of other vits, folate, B12 etc.etc But Vit D , is a good place to start. try and get your blood level up above 100, it will help, if not with these particular symptoms , but also with your overall health in other areas as well.

  Best of luck

Get your vitamin D levels checked, as well as thyroid and iron.

I felt like that, it was Vitamin D deficiency.

Thanks everyone. And for all the info. A few years ago I kept getting sinus infections and was found to have low vit D and iron levels. I still take a multivitamin so thought it couldn't be that but I think I'll get tested.

I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and when I wake up I feel as though I've been beaten up in the night. Could it really be Vitamin D? I have had many blood tests but don't know whether anyone's ever tested Vit D.

Are there any side effects or counter indications for taking it - I take so many other drugs and I really don't want to go to GP.

HiAgain Myuser
yes , multivitamins have only 400 IU of Vitamin D per pill. That is a very low dose. IF you are deficient , you cannot build up your reserves on that amount. In fact , 375 IU daily, is recommended for a baby , ( IF exclusively breast fed , ) so, since you weigh much more , you need much more .
A good sunbathing session, but with no burning , can produce 10,000 IU to 20,000 IU in your skin . 20 mins of strong sunlight , on any particular area of skin will produce the maximum amount of vitamin D , for that day. So there is no point in baking for hours in strong sunlight. BUT be aware that suncream , factor 15 or above , will stop you producing Vitamin D in the skin , it absorbs the UVB light , which creates the Vit D. Many organisations now recommend that you leave off suncreams for 20 mins for that very reason.

The fact that you have already been shown to be deficient with Vit D once , and bearing in mind , that the human body requires approx 65 to 70 IU per kilogram of weight , per day , from all sources , sun , food and supplement, this might indicate that you are probably quite low. Low vit D has also been associated with anxiety/depression. Have a good read of that thread above. !

Good Luck .

Hi Hortz,

Vitamin D deficiency syndrome has some similar symptoms to R.A. Vit D has effects upon our immune system. It tends to reduce inflammation. It cannot harm to check your level. IF you don't want to go to a doctor , you could get a private test done by a lab such as this NHS lab. You send a blood spot, and they reply by email within a week. IF not doctor ordered , then they do charge £29.

www.vitamindtest.org.uk/ OR other reputable labs.

Vitamin D is not a drug , it is an essential nutrient , if you don't get enough it can be very detrimental to your health. Over 2000 genes respond to vit D , that 10% of your 23,000 genes. Almost every cell in your body , heart, lung, brain liver, muscle ,skin, bone etc etc has vitamin d response elements in the genes. A great many people in the UK are deficient , thats why the government body Public Health England has recommended that everybody ensures they receive at least 400 IU per day , by supplement if necessary. That should prevent rickets. However, more than that is required to have other beneficial effects. Why not have a read of that thread, mentioned above.

Best of luck,
BTBH.

I find strange that nowadays VitD is always recommended. Not so long ago we were warned that as VitD is not water soluble, you could overdose as the excess is not passed in urine like for example VitC!

Hortz · 02/06/2019 13:49

Oldmum55 Yes that was at the back of my mind.
To say it is not a drug is slightly misleading as taking large doses of a vitamin is not a natural nutrient and it's not impossible that it would have an effect on prescribed medicines.
Having said that I'm aware there is a link with the immune system.
