Salmonella poisoning from a cat?!

Hi all
Just wanting some advice / thoughts.
I moved house last year, and 2,3 weeks later became violently ill - V&D, double vision etc, had to ship my kid off to my ex's. After 6 days went to see GP, who sent me off for blood tests. He then called me a few days later to tell me I had salmonella poisoning. Cue then the letters from the Env Health Dept or whatever with forms to fill in about where - what I'd eaten in the 2 weeks prior to getting ill.
I was confused - I'd not eaten out as tend to cook everything fresh and am fairly fastidious about not having take aways etc. Also was broke because of the move!
Anyway, after the move I did what you are supposed to with a cat and kept her in a small room, until she became adjusted, which was the kitchen. So her litter tray was (and I hate this and have always hated litter trays in kitchens) in there. I blame the salmonella on her jumping on kitchen surfaces and contaminating things..??? Doc said it could happen but he wasn't sure.

Anyway it looks like I might have salmonella again. I've had the blood tests but I know from how I'm feeling today that it's exactly the same symptoms. I anti-bac every counter before cooking, everything is always clean! The cat has a self-cleaning robot litter thing which sits in an out of the way space and hardly goes in to the kitchen..

Any advice please? I'm rapidly using up my sick leave quota..

Did you, at some point , feed raw meat to your cat? Could the cat be affected?
Do you use a fresh veggie box from a farm? One that come in these weekly delivery?

Cats can be a source of contamination but not very common.

Hey, no I also took the cat to the vet when I felt better and she said she was ok (last time). She only has kibble/biscuits which I pour into a cereal dispenser so generally never touch it.
Sigh, it's really awful, salmonella poisoning. Fortunately with the helps of a lot of antibacterial gel my kid seems immune. Thanks @LiliesAndChocolate x

Unless the vet did a rectal swap, you can't really know for sure if cat has salmonella.

I read a few years ago that a man died from Salmonella from picking cat poo up, i was quite shocked as i have a few cats, so it must be possible, i had actually forgotten about this until reading your post
I will now also be very careful as one of mine insists on jumping up whenever i an doing anything in the kitchen ,i would contact your vet again and ask about any specialist tests.although it come have come from any food that was already contaminated when you bought it
A friend of mine had really bad salmonella poisoning from restaurant food,
I hope you are ok now op

Salmonella in cats is really, really quite rare. Whilst theoretically possible the cats who have positive faecal cultures for salmonella always have diarrhoea and usually have blood in the faeces too.
Most common infections in humans are from food, contact with infected soil or contact with infected farm animals.
