Implant / pill

Hi I tried posting on women's health with zero replies, so thought I would try my luck here!

Just a quick heads up, I'm not sure if this will contain everyone's definition of TMI, but it may do, relating to periods etc.

So.. I'll start with some background info.
Currently, I have the nexplanon implant in, it's been in since September 2016, and is due out September this year.

It was the first contraception I've had put in solely for the purpose of contraception, and with regards to that, I am 100% happy so far. It is either doing its job perfectly or I am physically unable to have children.. undeterminable at the moment so I am erring on the slightly more positive side of things that it's the implant working 🤞🏻

However, in terms of bleeding, I am less than impressed. 3 months of nothing, then monthly, then fortnightly, then every 6 weeks or so, and recently it has been about 40 days of bleeding with perhaps 4 days of nothing/minimal, making me think it had finally stopped. Equivalently, it seems like 3 periods rolled into one really.
All accompanied with the usual cramps and mood swings and emotional issues.

(Emotional issues which again, have been worse since being on the implant - it has thoroughly affected my mood etc)

Prior to the implant I was on contraception to try and regulate my periods time wise, and symptom wise.
Initially the mini pill which resulted in constant bleeding, and then after coming iff that and leaving it a few months I went back to the GP and "forgot" to mention my migraine and got the combined pill. This worked spectacularly even when I forgot them occasionally.

If you've made it this far congratulations!

My query is this: when I saw the GP the other day (for unrelated reasons) he offered me the mini pill to take alongside the implant to control the bleeding.
Am I wrong to assume that bleeding(mini pill previously) + bleeding(implant) will just = excessive bleeding?

Has anyone had experience of this before? Is it worth taking them?
Will i just be making my 40 days even longer?

Is it a different mini pill? There are maybe 3 different types available

sazzle27 · 24/05/2019 09:05

The same hormone - progesterone only - is in all the mini pill types so I had assumed brand wouldn't make a difference..

I have probably been given a different brand but I can't remember which one I first took (7 is h years ago)..

When I was on the implant I also had the pill due to random bleeding - I had no pattern at all! I think it was a fairly low dose one, like mercillon (no idea if that's the mini pill or something else Blush). They seemed to suggest it was fairly normal. My periods were then very very light and always when I had a break in the pill.

I didn't have another one out back in when I had it out, didn't seem any point when I was also on the pill!

I had the same thing on the implant. Bled pretty much constantly for the 2 years I was on it. Then took the pill to stop the bleeding. The hormones were terrible. Made me a terrible person.

Had it out, opted for the coil. No periods and a lot less hormones so win win for me.

sazzle27 · 24/05/2019 09:48

@ryanreynolds was it a pill which you took for 3 weeks and then had a week off? If so.. thats the combined one which worked a dream for me but unfortunately I cant have anymore due to migraines with auras 😩

I'm really struggling hormone wise on it.. mood is so so low and I get so snipey too..
I definitely wont be having one out back in..

There are 3 different types of mini pill with different hormones. I tried 2 that gave me fortnightly periods before settling on the 3rd that stopped them

dementedpixie · 24/05/2019 10:58

Cerelle/Cerazette (plus a few more) are progesterone-only pills which contains desogestrel, a synthetic sex hormone.

Norgeston: contains a synthetic form of progesterone called levonorgestrel

Noriday: is a mini pill which contains the active ingredient, norethisterone, a synthetic form of progesterone

Different hormones can give different effects

@dementedpixie
Thank you for that - rather naively I assumed the main difference was purely combined/mini and they would all work much the same!

Have you had experience of both?

I tried 2 of the 3 hour window ones (one was micronor which they don't make any more) and then I tried cerazette which was a 12 hour window one and it stopped my periods

dementedpixie · 24/05/2019 14:50

Femulen was the other one, also discontinued

I also got on well with the mirena coil as it stopped my periods too. Depo injection made me bleed and gain weight
