Is my body falling apart since hitting my mid thirties?!

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 21/05/2019 16:43

I’m too young for aches and pains aren’t I?! I turned 36 last week in over the last few weeks I’ve started getting really sore knees when they stay in the same position for too long (eg long haul flight) and my right hip and leg is in agony after doing my usual pathetic 3000 steps after school drop off. I am a healthy weight and relatively healthy diet but haven’t exercised in a very long time.
Am I:
A) old
B) unfit
C) something else going on?!

Is it worth me seeing a physio or doctor, or just do some low impact exercise to see if that’s the problem?

Absolutely!
Once I hit 35...that was it! A slippery slope downhill Smile
In all seriousness I'm 36 too and struggle with a bad back/hip, I try and stretch each morning!

Koolbeans · 21/05/2019 19:44

My body got to 30 then clapped out. I dread to think what I'll be like at 35. I can't even bend down without saying "oof" Grin

SpoonBlender · 21/05/2019 20:02

Right leg sounds like it might be a real problem if it's that sharp a pain.

Joints 'setting' when you don't move for a while is a very 30s thing. That'll only get worse, so if you can make yourself a "move, you idiot" reminder technique that'll be a habit well worth embedding.

Also, do some yoga. It helps.

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 21/05/2019 21:06

Ugh

Thanks guys

Back to yoga I go - used to do it a lot and I miss it so I guess I need to start strengthening my body!

Yeah man same here

Brutal I tell ya

Iggly · 21/05/2019 21:09

I’ve found that since having children I’ve had to concentrate on fixing my pelvic floor and core. As a result my back aches less and I get less hip problems.

I’m convinced my tendons and muscles etc have got weird and loose since having kids 😂

Thatsnotmyname4291 · 21/05/2019 21:11

If I stand up and try to walk after sitting for ‘too long’ (an hour?) my feet are all weird and stiff. I have so much sympathy for old people these days.

YeOldeTrout · 21/05/2019 21:18

My knees blew up when I was 30. I think they might be finally recovering now (21 yrs later).

foodiefil · 21/05/2019 21:20

Do any of you exercise or have weight issues? If you have problems. Serious question. I'm early 30s - touch wood no problems yet - just wondering about prevention

Fatted · 21/05/2019 21:23

Are you on any contraception? Certain types of contraceptive are linked to osteoporosis with extended use. Falling estrogen levels can also do it. You could always ask the doctor to check your calcium and vitamin D levels.

mrwalkensir · 21/05/2019 21:49

Take vitamin D. My joints improved massively (not quickly, but over a few months).

rslsys · 21/05/2019 22:05

Wait till you get to your 60s. You'll look back on the days of single digit ailments wistfully . . .

YesQueen · 21/05/2019 22:08

Mine gave up age 31
I developed a condition where I kill off my white blood cells Hmm thanks for that
Herniated a disc (no idea how), got cauda equina and needed 5hrs of spinal surgery
Oh and my knees crack constantly which the doctor says is "wear and tear"

Hearhere · 21/05/2019 22:11

Use it or lose it

PearlandRubies194 · 21/05/2019 22:12

My favourite memory of when I was in my 20s was not having knee pain

YesQueen · 21/05/2019 22:52

@Hearhere use it or lose it not really applicable to stuff you can't control... Hmm

justforareply · 21/05/2019 22:56

When I was 30ish, I was waking up in mornings so stiff it took me a good 10m to be able to straighten up to full standing position. Went to Dr and was told it was age.
I got a new mattress and it was like a miracle. No problems similar since

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 21/05/2019 23:56

Not overweight, not on contraception, live in Southern California so Vit D not a prob - could get my calcium levels checked though

Signing up for Pilates!

@yesqueen, I don't doubt it, however your point is besides my point
Furthermore my point stands
my point being that, broadly speaking exercise improves your well-being, surely you'll agree with that?

Killerqueen2244 · 22/05/2019 00:28

You’re not alone! Same age- I’ve done some mid intensity exercise and walked the dogs for 40 mins today and my knees have been sore all night! They’ve played up since I had a child (always been fine before despite teaching fitness for a living) so not sure if it’s a thing I should go to the doc about or if I should continue with what I’m doing and hoping it’s just a muscle imbalance causing it. Hmm

Getting older really does suck!!!

managedmis · 22/05/2019 00:35

Do any of you exercise or have weight issues

^^

I chase around after two kids all day and don't have weight problems.

It's just more a feeling of being knackered, hips aching, I say 'ooouuff' when I get up from the chair nowadays Grin

Digestion is more sensitive too.

wineandsunshine · 22/05/2019 06:44

No weight issues - run x twice a week, work full time and chase 4 DS's around.....just life I guess!

Thatsnotmyname4291 · 22/05/2019 11:20

I exercise a decent amount. Losing a couple of pounds wouldn’t hurt but not huuuge.

YeOldeTrout · 22/05/2019 20:43

Exercise much contributed to many of my knee and other issues. I'm just not cut out for endurance things I reckon. Not fat either. Am another wrinkled sun lover who never used the pill... and still get a lot of exercise compared to most people but there's loads of exercise things I would never aspire to (like running a halfM). I'm a natural born wimp, it seems.

GreyTS · 22/05/2019 20:50

Yikes, really hoping I don't jinx myself here but I'm 41 and don't have a single ache and pain, never have had. Eat pretty healthy and am quite light, 53kgs but also eat a good bit of junk. Run almost every day, 5-10kms depending, do a couple of spin classes and a hiit class. Used to do several sports competitively so not down to under exercise. Wonder if it's genetic, my mum is pain free at 67 but she's a yoga teacher, anyway whatever it is I hope it lasts
