Intercostal muscles are the muscles between the ribs. These are the ones that can give you the 'stitch' type feeling when you breathe in. Are these the ones you mean?

NAB3 · 19/07/2007 21:05

Okay. I am off now but want lots of help by tomorrow as it flipping hurts! TIA.

Oh, thank you Bubble99. Cross post there. I guess so. My friend is a Nurse and she told me the name. if I really laugh or do a sharp breath in, it really hurts (and is a little bit scarey). Don't know if connected to when I cracked my rib.

This sounds like an inflamation of the tissue which joins the ribs to the sternum,i think it is called costalchondritis, can be caused by a virus or a blow to the area.

Bubble99 · 19/07/2007 21:13

Have you got a cough/chest infection at the moment? And how long ago did you crack your rib?

NAB3 · 19/07/2007 21:13

What do I do? Will it eventually stop hurting?

I've just googled 'causes of pleuretic muscle pain' and would do a link but there are far too many to know which link would be best. I'd suggest you google same as there is loads of info.

Good luck, hope you feel better soon

Bubble99 · 19/07/2007 21:16

Better check with your GP. But I wouldn't think it has anything to do with the cracked rib.

Could be pleurisy? Which would account for the pain on deep breathing/laughing.

NAB3 · 19/07/2007 21:17

I went to the GP today as my asthma has been bad and mentioned it in case it was linked. He hadn't heard of the PM. He listened to me breathing in and out and all was okay.

NAB3 - It's usually the pleural membrane that causes the pain. Please keep an eye on this and go back to your GP if it doesn't improve. Can be due to fairly trivial conditions, and also some more serious.

I've had this pain three times. First time pleurisy, second pneumonia and third a pulmonary embolism.

Sh*t.
