Horrible taste in mouth, no other symptoms

Hi all,

WWYD - I have a horrible taste in my mouth, not every day but maybe 2 days a week.

I’m definitely not pregnant, although I did get similar when I was (in early pregnancy, not late). It’s not linked to a specific food.

I don’t have any other symptoms but it’s horrible. Would you go to the doctor? What else could it be?

I'd say you need the dentists rather than a doctor. It's their area.

Have you recently eaten lots of pine nuts? That messed up my sense of taste for ages!

eternalfun · 16/05/2019 22:20

Not eaten lots of pine nuts! I do have nuts for breakfast today but that was a once off.

ninecoronas yes! I had that once, I ate a bunch of pine nuts and it affected my sense of taste for days. I read something about it but can’t remember what the reason was now? Was it a dodgy batch or something?

Tonsil stones hiding in crypts? Gargle warm salt water.

QueenAnneBoleyn · 16/05/2019 22:29

I had this a while back. For me it was the start of an awful sinus infection.

Seaweed42 · 16/05/2019 22:48

Do you eat differently some days of the week for some reason? Or exercise a lot the nights before the funny taste days? Dehydration can cause this taste in the mouth.

eternalfun · 18/05/2019 08:05

@seaweed42 I don’t think so. The nuts for breakfast was just a one off but he horrible taste has been on lots of other days.

I had thought it was possibly heartburn however I don’t get any other symptoms.

I will think more about dehydration from previous days - that’s interesting, and I probably don’t drink enough on the days I am at work.

Any other suggestions?

Silent reflux did it for me. Awful, bitter taste in my mouth, couldn’t get rid of it.

I suspect you're probably too young for this, but it is quite common to get a metallic kind of taste in your mouth as you begin to enter the menopause.

eternalfun · 18/05/2019 08:37

@megrichardson I’m 41. Is that too young?

@OneOfTheGrundys how did you conclude it was silent reflux? Did you ever see a doctor?

@eternalfun I really don't know. Perhaps if you begin to feel unwell in other ways you should go to your GP. Do come back one day and let us know if you ever find out what it was!

I used to get a bad taste sensation which wasn't related to anything I'd eaten. The weird thing is, it seemed to be related to upper body muscles, possibly shoulder muscles - I'd had a shoulder injury. If the muscles were painful, I was more likely to get the taste thing. As far as I can remember, the taste was kind of oily or like fumes. It was years ago & I don't get it any more.

You could also get a dental check -- could it be related to your teeth?

OneOfTheGrundys · 20/05/2019 23:00

Yes I had a referral for a nasendoscopy. They could see the base of my throat was all burned.
