URGENT HELP! 11 months old eaten contaminated toast.

ArtichokeTagine · 19/07/2007 12:07

DH gave DD some toast. Then started to eat some himself. Thought it tasted weird. Eventually realised the whole Hovis Loaf was damp and stank of a chemical. Seemed like a prodcut such as Flash had got into the bag and seeped into the bread. Don't know that it was Flash but similar smell. Must have happened in the shop as we kept bread in the bread bin.

DH snatched toast of DD but she had eaten half a slice already. This was 30mins ago. DH ate most of his slice and feels fine. DD so far seems fine. Should I take her to the doctor anyway? We are meant to be dropping her at nursey at 1pm. Is that a bad idea now?

Ring nhs direct they were very good when ds sprayed shower cleaner in his mouth. They will be very thorough and very good at putting your mind at rest.

generally speaking these things have to be consumed in vast quantities to have ill effect

Hathor · 19/07/2007 12:10

Phone NHS Direct. How old DD? Guess v small if going to nursery. Expect it will be OK though if a cleaning product cant be too much of it on the one slice if you only noticed from the smell.

tortoiseSHELL · 19/07/2007 12:10

Definitely phone NHS direct, they can probably give you a number for a Poisons unit. Hope she's ok.

bundle · 19/07/2007 12:11

ring your local A&E they will contact the poisons unit (I think it's at guy's hospital) though I spose it's tricky if you can't identify it

ConnorTraceptive · 19/07/2007 12:19

obviously don't throw bread away yet.

patronuscharm · 19/07/2007 12:20

NHS Direct

0845 46 47

They are really good.

Whizzz · 19/07/2007 12:22

Ditto Connor about needing big quantities to do any real damage.
Once you have your DD sorted though, I'd ring the shop too & tell them to investigate / sort out their food storage !

ArtichokeTagine · 19/07/2007 12:22

I am on hold to NHS Direct now. DD is 11 months old so obviously cannot tell us how she feels. She is acting OK though.

Dh just rang Waitrose (where we bought the bread). We cannot beleive how unconcerned and unhelpful they were. They basically said it would not have happened at their shop or in the Ocado van and it wasn't their prob! It had to have happened at their end as we keep our cleaning prodcuts in a totally different room and none of our products smell like the break smells.

"bread" not "break"

Hathor · 19/07/2007 12:23

I am sure DD will be OK.

Keep the bread for analyisis. When you have sorted DD out phone Environmental Health Dpt of local council. Keep bread in freezer til then. Ocado have no leg to stand on. Posh nobs.

DangerousBeans · 19/07/2007 12:26

Absolutely - once your DD has been given the all clear, you must report this to the council.
I'm sure she'll be fine.

ArtichokeTagine · 19/07/2007 12:45

Hmmmm. Given DD's age NHS Direct suggested A&E but I am not sure as DD seems fine. Would you go to A&E??

OP posts:
patronuscharm · 19/07/2007 12:48

I did when DS took a mouthful of bathroom cleaner (I'd put some in a container to clean it out - DS found it). He didn't actually swallow any of the cleaner but NHS Direct suggested A+E. DS was kept in overnight for observation (as it was 8pm)but was fine.

LilRedWG · 19/07/2007 12:50

If they suggested A&E for an 11 month old I'd go. Probably wouldn't for myself though!

hufflebranpuff · 19/07/2007 12:59

That's not true that it couldn't have happened in Ocado van. I have a had a delivery in the past where bleach leaked onto food. I didn't actually receive the food as the delivery man noticed when he was unloading the van and kept the contaminated food back.

It's worth checking all the cleaning product containers that have been delivered to see if there are any that are not full or that show signs of leaking so that you have better information to give to NHS Direct.

I hope you dd will be ok (I'm sure that she will if she still seems fine now).

tortoiseSHELL · 19/07/2007 13:14

I think I would take her to A&E, partly to absolutely check she's ok (and they will have a list of poisons), and also to give you more weight when you write and complain to Ocado, and ask for compensation.

ConnorTraceptive · 19/07/2007 16:35

how is dd?

mumofSlytherinsmonsters · 19/07/2007 16:39

how is she? did you take her to A&E?

ArtichokeTagine · 19/07/2007 22:36

Just logged on again after busy day of waiting rooms. DD is fine. We took her in and took the bread with us. They think it was lemon scented bleach! She obviously only ingested a tiny, tiny bit and they checked her thoroughly. She never showed any ill effects all day. Now I just have to sort out Ocado. Am v v cross still .

Not surprised, I'd be furious at their lacksidaisical attitude.
