Adult ds has had a bad headache for a week now. Out of ten he rates it as between 6 and 11 in so far as it never goes away and is anything between bad and awful. Been taking maximum dose paracetamol and ibuprofen now since last Thursday.
Finally saw GP yesterday morning as had had vomiting and photophobia and pain when moving for two days. GP examined him temp and blood pressure normal, some stiffness in neck and blurred optic discs.
Sent him to A&E to rule out meningitis and "anything nasty" Ds had normal ECG and bloods were clear. Was told scanner was fully booked but they would write to GP about needing a scan in a couple of days as optic discs malaligned but described it as a severe migraine.
Ds is still no better, has spent the day laid in the dark or sleeping. He will return to GP tomorrow at my insistence.
Could this be a severe migraine? I'm trying not to panic but it's difficult.

I've suffered from migraines over the years OP and paracetamol/ibuprofen would not even begin to touch it. I'd see his GP in the morning for some pain relief in the immediate instance, and insist on an urgent scan. Go with him to make sure he's not fobbed off.

Hope he's better soon.

Are lumbar punctures a bit risky, & painful?
Any change today, OP?

Grey - yes, obviously you need to do imaging too. Migraines don’t cause disc swelling.

underneaththeash · 17/05/2019 10:41

OP - forgot to say, I hope you are getting to the bottom of everything.

I think it could just be a migraine but I am no doctor and if he's not improving would go back to A&E or at least call 111 if over the weekend.

I just spent yesterday in A&E and they were very thorough - did lots of blood tests, ECG, CT scan of brain, neurological tests there and are arranging MRI of brain and spine and have done test for lyme going back to doctors - obviously depends on how busy they are, doctor and whether they assess as urgent or non-urgent.

Hope he's OK. My daughter has migraines which make her sick and doctor gave her special medication for migraines - think its Triptans.

How is he OP?

fleshmarketclose · 18/05/2019 13:07

Sorry for not updating. A&E didn't contact GP so GP ended up chasing. Bloods and ECG were clear ruling out meningitis A&E reported it as a severe migraine but raised concerns about misaligned/blurred optic discs and asked GP to make a referral for investigation and so that is in progress.
Ds who is 30 is in less pain, still troubled by lights and pain if not laid in a darkened room and still on regular painkillers. He has an opticians appointment next week where he will mention pain photophobia etc.
I'm still worried, ds less so because the pain is subsiding slowly but at least referrals are in and he should be seen soon.

Thanks for update. X fingers that he keeps improving & it blows over as 'one of those things'. Let us know what happens if you can.
