Im due to get Invisalign braces next week and have an appointment to get a baby tooth out taken out the day before. I’m petrified of the dentist (finally had the balls to get braces after 10 years of putting it off) and I’m trying my best to get this baby tooth out myself so the dentist doesn’t have to do it for me!

It’s a bit wobbly already but not majorly.

I know a lot of people will just say to leave it for the dentist but I have a really bad phobia Blush so if I could rip it out myself first I would rather do that!

At least if the dentist does it you will get pain relief first

Woowee · 13/05/2019 09:49

It’s not the pain that’s bothers me. It’s very difficult to explain but I would do anything to not have to go into the dentist to get it removed...

Any tips welcome!

Be very careful. If you fracture the root trying, they will have to dig around and surgically remove it.

Hi, I’m a dentist! I’m assuming as you still have a baby tooth, there was no adult tooth to replace it? Or it may have been pushed aside and the adult tooth has come through in a different place? Either way, if it’s still there then there’s likely to be a fair bit of root under there holding it in, hence it’s not overly wobbly. The only reason baby teeth fall out naturally is that the root dissolves due to pressure from the adult tooth coming through beneath. So it’s very unlikely to come out just by you wobbling it and would also be very painful without anaesthetic. Have you discussed with your dentist about your phobia and what is involved in your treatment? You will need several appointments with them for your treatment. Is it just the extraction that worries you? You could discuss the option of sedation for this part. Let your dentist know your concerns so that they can do their best for you. They won’t want you to be anxious and can give you options for different ways to provide your treatment.

Thanks for replying sfb182!

It’s a baby tooth below an impacted canine. The orthodontist has told me that as soon as my baby tooth is removed, he wants the braces in the same day if possible incase my canine comes down quickly. The orthodontist says he can’t remove the baby tooth and that my own NHS dentist has to do it but whenever I mention to her about my phobia she just says, aww!!

I’m not so worried about my Invisalign as I won’t really be getting any work done, but even a check up gets me really worked up.

I never thought about the root holding it in place. I just assumed all baby teeth would eventually come wobbly and just fall out!

The actual removal of the tooth is likely to be very quick, probably less than a minute. All the dentist is actually doing is wobbling it but while you’re numb so with a bit more pressure that you could do without anaesthetic. The anaesthetic is just a small scratch like a vaccination and then you won’t feel anything. It’s food to take a friend/family member for hand holding, or your headphones to play your own music etc.. to help take your mind off things. Keep thinking about why you’re doing it and be brave! It will all be done really quickly!

*good not food!

Woowee · 13/05/2019 18:27

Thank you so much you have really reassured me! I’m not a control freak normally but I am in circumstances that I don’t know what’s going to be happening so now I have a good idea it’s settled me abit. Il try and keep in mind the reason why I’m doing it! A baby tooth coming out is a small price to pay for lovely teeth!

My dd had to get a baby tooth removed to allow an adult tooth to come through. The adult tooth was pushing against another adult tooth in the gum and was not pushing against the baby tooth so it wasn't coming out as it should

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 13/05/2019 20:39

All they do is rock it with a bit more pressure each time until it comes loose. It doesn't hurt. You won't feel a thing not even the injection if you tell them you're scared, they use this gel that tastes like bubblegum to numb your gum before they inject you. I shut my eyes and played music the whole time and was fine. I threw up before I left, I was so anxious but it was actually fine.
