Does Piriton do the same job as Medised for drying up runny noses or not ??

Medised always works brilliantly for drying up a runny nose and stopping a tickly cough, but mine all hate the taste and so I don't buy it anymore.

Was wondering if Piriton would do the same as they are both antihistamines.

Prob work as they both are anti hist and also make them drowsy which can only be a good thing

debbsyandsonn · 18/07/2007 21:25

Piriton is an antihistamine with an active ingredient of prochlorperazine, but medised isnt its a painkiller which contains paracetamol. So no they dont work the same at all sorry.

SlightlyMadSpider · 18/07/2007 21:36

Medised is paracetamol + an anti-histamine

nutcracker · 18/07/2007 21:41

Oh no I realise that medised has paracetamol in, but thats not what stops the coughing is it, it's the antihistamine ??

Thats why I thought Piriton may do the same.

ill check it never used to be antihistamine is used for hayfever and runny noses and itchy throats associated with hayfever,if you want something for a cough you are better with a demulcent like simple linctus.

Piriton is apparently Diphenhydramine, which is an active ingrediant in Benylin (for cold and flu). This is what the Benylin website says about it so I guess it does the runny nose (but not hte dry cough)....

Diphenhydramine is a type of medicine called a sedating antihistamine. It enters the brain in sufficient quantities to cause drowsiness, and this sedative effect may also help suppress a cough.

Nasal mucus can often be the cause of cough in a cold, because it drips down the back of the throat, causing irritation. Diphenhydramine also drys nasal secretions, by stopping a natural body chemical called histamine from binding to its receptors. Histamine is a chemical produced naturally by the body that has many effects, including the production of allergic symptoms, such as a runny nose. Blocking histamine receptors prevents the actions of histamine, which reduces the production of mucus in the nose.

Yes for the cough I would go for Buttercup syrup. It is supposed to treat all coughs - I can never work out the difference between a dry cough and a tickly cough (chesty is normally obvious)

nutcracker · 18/07/2007 21:53

Ahhh so it might work then, thanks for that Spider.

Might stop ds coughing so much that he throws up all over his bed

nutcracker · 18/07/2007 21:54

Oh never used Buttercup, although I do remebmer my mum buying me the throat sweets when I stabbed a hole in the back of my throat

Will have a look at that too.

I took them off the Benylin website actually ...

nutcracker · 18/07/2007 21:55

It's a tickly cough caused by the mucus dripping down the back of his throat. He need something to dry it up, which is what medised normally does.

Oh, he is 4.6

I got fed up having 2 bottles of cough syrup in the cupboard and then not knowing which one to use. Now I use Buttercup as it says suitable for all coughs.....

TBH I rarely treat cougs unless they are particularly bad at night and they are affecting sleep ...... which I guess it is if he is throwing up as a result.

Menthol vapours also help i find.

debbsyandsonn · 18/07/2007 21:58

the best thing to do then depending on id the rubbish is clear is saline nasel drops, and paed simple linctus, also a wet towel on a warm radiator or a bowl of hot water (obviosly away from him) in his room as this will keep the room ventilated and his nasel passages open, also tip the top of his bed this should aid a restful nights sleep.

nutcracker · 18/07/2007 22:00

Oky doky, thanks very much, you've both been very helpful.

He is now fast asleep and no cough in sight, but then that alway happens after he is sick with it.

Oh and he is in my bed, which will please him LOL.

buttercup works the same but its got more sugar in.dry cough is rasping and continous and tickly where a chesty cough comes from rubbish collected on the chest, different cough mixtures work in different ways according to what sort of cough it is.Hope he feels better soon

SlightlyMadSpider · 18/07/2007 22:01

I was going to suggest the humidifier on hte radiator....and then I thought about the fact that it is 28C in our bedrooms without the radiators...o thought that probably wasn't actually the best suggestion at this time of year (but one to note for winter )

debbsyandsonn · 18/07/2007 22:03

hmm i was thnking that too with the`warm radiator spider, not good in this weather.
