I had no idea about this until I read this article yesterday, which details the worst kinds of air pollution that we're exposed to during a normal working day. Scented candles and incense are both air pollutants! Just thought I'd share that, as I feel like particularly candles are in almost everyone's home these days www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/air-pollution-snuff-out-scented-candles-and-avoid-tube-how-to-clean-your-air-gps5l9s8r

This story gets repeated in a different "news"paper every few months. A colleague of mine nearly murdered her partner when he threw away all her scented candles because the Daily Mail said they were harmful. (He's a retired doctor, so I'd have thought the fact he believed a story in the Daily Mail would have been grounds for putting him in a home.)

Like the stories about red wine/dark chocolate having health benefits, these kinds of stories should be ignored.

They have these at work and they make me feel very sick, dizzy and affect my sinuses which results in a great deal of pain. I can't go in to shops that have them either.

All sorts of products we purchase pollute the air in our homes.

AnnaMagnani · 12/05/2019 17:47

It's not wrong for all your colleagues, friends and family who have asthma and migraine.

I visited my SIL and she has those incense sticks in her loo. Within seconds I was having an asthma attack.

Worked somewhere where they thought it would be nice to have some aromatherapy oils diffusing for the patients. I had to ask for them to be switched off as I was getting a migraine and was twitchy for my inhaler.

Not everyone thinks they are 'lovely smells' - they are positively dangerous for others.

What????!!!! Are they not actually good for you?! I live my life by the chocolate and wine stories Blush

missmouse101 · 12/05/2019 17:59

They're made with multiple artificial chemicals. If you can smell them, you're inhaling them. If you inhale artificial chemicals, then are you really surprised they are bad for you?

greenelephantscarf · 12/05/2019 18:00

they are really bad for you.
same as wood burners.
small particle pollution plus voc.

I didn’t even know there was a candle lobby until I saw someone link to a press release from them as evidence that candles are totally harmless.

That is of course a totally unbiased source. No need to dig any further.

juneau · 12/05/2019 18:27

I love the link to the candle lobby Hmm Yeah, we can definitely expect them to tell the truth about all the soot being added to the air in your home by all the billions of scented candles out there ...

Soot is soot. Doesn't matter if it comes from a log burner, a coal fire or a scented candle.

If you want your home to smell nice, your best bet is to clean it very thoroughly, using small quantities of unscented ecological cleaning products (including laundry detergents), and to buy a nice bunch of flowers.

And open the windows.
