Anyone fancy helping me through bowel prep!

Having a colonoscopy tomorrow and about to drink my first sachet of laxative.

I'm on my own and quite tearful and scared about what the next few hours are going to bring.

If anyone's got any advice or jokes please share them here.

It just says avoid black currant.

I think things are starting...

Ahaha! I spent hours after my first dose sulkily coming back from the bathroom and just saying "nope" to my husband 😠

Then it kicked in... It was most brutal after the second dose in my experience. Nearly didn't make it to the hospital!

BloomedAgain · 09/05/2019 15:42

Good to hear you can choose your sedation etc. Good luck with it OP!

gamerchick · 09/05/2019 15:43

Put some vasaline on your ringpiece from the off. You'll get sore from the wiping surprisingly fast.

Good luck, the prep is the worst part. The rest is a piece of piss.

Wherearemyminions · 09/05/2019 15:48

You have my sympathy! Pop wet wipes in the fridge and hope it all goes well!

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 09/05/2019 15:56

I think there will be more to come - I had a few bouts of clear liquid coming from my bum (shouldn't it still be brown?) and that was it. Feel like it's all over now.

Ok, spoke too soon

I was so close to just calling to cancel but I've come this far...

Well done Nigel, the prep is underway and just think it will be over and done with tomorrow.
They'll be very used to people being nervous or anxious and will do their best to put you at ease.
Very best of luck!

StormTreader · 09/05/2019 17:56

"Feel like it's all over now."

"Ok, spoke too soon"

I am fully sympathetic but this did make me laugh - this was totally my experience of it as well! :D

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 09/05/2019 18:21

Thanks all. Done a fair bit of pooing. Not running clear though. Dreading taking the next lot! But just counting down the hours til it will all be over. Thanks for holding my hand.

Are you feeling ok with not eating etc?

Doilooklikeatourist · 09/05/2019 20:31

I was complimented on my nice clean bowel last time I had one 😀 ( preens )
And , the procedure was on a Sunday , so I took the Kleen Prep ( sp ) on a Saturday night ... Strictly final night ! A lot of pausing the TV and dashing to the bathroom
Saggy knickers and tracksuit bottoms are needed
Keep drinking and dashing ,
Watch it tomorrow if you can , and sing the Dr Who theme tune ( that’s what it looked like to me , but I did have a relaxing drug to help )

ssunniebear · 09/05/2019 21:18

Peppermint tea or bovril if you are board of cold drinks

HitthefloorforTaintedLove · 10/05/2019 00:08

Are you still on the throne Nigel?

Hope you have a nice clean bowel like Tourist

ifIwerenotanandroid · 10/05/2019 00:23

Good luck for tomorrow. (I've had two. Have they warned you about the wind afterwards? Just let rip, was my doc's advice - so I did. WinkBlush)

managedmis · 10/05/2019 00:28

Hope you're OK op.

I'm a broken record but the prep is the worst bit as they all say.

I took mine then woke up in the middle of the night with explosive diahorreah, totally cleared me out. I think I had (sorry TMI) two massive shits and then it was just liquidy, bit like wee really.

Dunno about squash, I stuck to the info to the letter, I didnt want to have to do it twice!

managedmis · 10/05/2019 00:30

I remember with mine my surgeon was delayed so I went something like 36 hours without food or something ridiculous but felt surprisingly OK Hmm

And I lost about 4lbs! Grin

Moviprep veteran here. My tips:

  1. Mix well ahead so it is very cold.
  2. Using a straw can help bypass the taste.
  3. Drink fast and don't let the foul tasting stuff linger in your mouth before swallowing.
  4. Use Vaseline or some sort of barrier cream on the sensitive spot before it starts burning like crazy. If you get to burning it is too late.
  5. Try to relax and watch or read something light hearted. Stay really close to the bathroom
  6. Do not be alarmed if what you are expelling in the end is not clear like water. It will be yellowish.
  7. Drink lots of water throughout. Apple juice is good too as it bumps your blood sugar up a bit.
  8. Baby wipes can help but of course you can't flush them.
  9. I freaked out one time when I was expelling more brownish stuff (sorry yuck factor) the morning of but the doctor told me it was just bile and not an indication of poor clean out.

Don't worry. I know that is hard and last time I spent a good part of the night before foolishly googling colonoscopy horror stories. It didn't help!

It will be over before you know it and they will offer you a nice little snack. Then you can congratulate yourself on your bravery and common sense. Try not to be smug with everyone you meet who is totally petrified of them (ha ha). Believe it or not, my good friend the ophthalmologist confessed that oh no he could never do that.

Cheers!

Hi how are you getting on? I had one yesterday and it really wasn’t too bad. The prep and not eating was the worst bit. When I got to the hospital I asked for the sedative and pain relief right away. They changed cameras part way through so the doc couid get round the bends in the colon easier. I was awake and talking throughout - the staff said that’s not always the case. Really clear view of the colon on the screen - they took some biopsies which was painless. The best bit was the cup of tea and biscuits after! Told to take it easy (no driving, operating machinery, taking important decisions, work) for 24 hours - but feel fine perhaps still a little tired. You’ll be fine good luck!

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 10/05/2019 07:12

I'm in the hospital car park waiting for it to open trying not to shit myself! This stuff will just not wear off. I didn't find the pooing too bad, I just feel so drained and tired and ready for it to be over so I can have a macdonalds. Grin

Yes that’s the best reward - will soon be over 😊🍔

HitthefloorforTaintedLove · 10/05/2019 08:31

Good luck Nigel hope you get it done soon.

TapasForTwo · 10/05/2019 08:45

Good luck. Been there and got the Tshirt.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 10/05/2019 09:58

Been sitting in a gown for two hours now. Apparently the doctor "can't make it" and they are finding someone else. I will do it myself at this rate!
