Trans nasal endoscopy

I’m due to have an endoscopy but have just been reading about having it done through the nose instead. Anyone had it done like this? Is it safer?

If I'm right trans nasal endoscopies are only designed to look at the nose and throat and not the stomach

@PeanuttyButter Incorrect, you may be thinking of what ENTs do (laryngoscopy).

@Somethingsosimple I'm an endoscopy nurse and around 95% of the gastroscopies we perform are done transnasally. Generally the patient finds it less uncomfortable, there's less chance of gagging so much, and you are still free to speak. It's not suitable for everyone - some people have very narrow nasal passages - and also not all hospitals have transnasal endoscopes so it isn't offered everywhere.
I've seen thousands of these procedures performed and if I were to choose for myself, I'd go transnasal every time.

Interesting. What's the gauge of the nasal endoscopes?

Another thread on this?

@PeanuttyButter Unsure of the exact gauge but this is the scope we use www.olympus.co.uk/transnasal-endoscopy/range_of_equipment.html

@faelavie thanks so much for replying. I have now booked to have it done transnasally.
