How do you get rid of mouth ulcers?

Bubbaloo · 17/07/2007 19:06

Ds1 is very fussy with his food anyway, but has been screaming and refusing to eat his tea tonight. He's still too young to tell me whats wrong but when I've looked in his mouth he has quite a few small mouth ulcers.
Any ideas please on how to get rid of them or does he need a trip to the doctors?
Tia.

does he have sores on his hands and/or feet?

when my dd was about that age she had hand foot and mouth disease. its very contageous and common in toddlers

Feedmenow · 17/07/2007 19:08

Depends. Is it just one or two, or a whole load? If it's just a couple then it is probable due to him being tired and under the weather, and bonjela or teething gel would probably do the trick. But if he has loads it could be an infection that may need something stronger and/or antibiotics. Can you give him some Calpol tonight to ease the pain and help him sleep?
Good luck!

TheMuppetMuggle · 17/07/2007 19:09

Hun, either get some difflam spray you can get at chemist or other way is salt water around mouth and spit out.
Both will sting but will get rid of them quicker

nailpolish · 17/07/2007 19:10

i wouldnt give a 2yr old salt water - too likely they will swallow it and vomit

littlerach · 17/07/2007 19:11

There is an ointment called fraydor which really works, but I don't know the minimum age fo rit.

Bubbaloo · 17/07/2007 19:12

Thanks-no sores on his hands and feet thank goodness but he's very grizzly.I gave him a dose of Calpol earlier which seemed to perk him up for a while, but now it's bed time, obviously he's tired which also doesn't help. There seems to be quite a few ulcers-about 3 or 4 under each lip.
Just off to Sainsburys to get something from the pharmacy before they close, but will be back shortly.

hope he feels better soon

maybe hes run down or teething - back teeth?
i hope the pharmacist can advise you

Idobelieveinfairies · 17/07/2007 19:14

Salty water is ideal for numbing them (after the initial ahhhhhhhhhhhh! but i doubt he would spit it out. Bonjela is probably the best thing.

Poor little man, they are sooo sore

Feedmenow · 17/07/2007 19:16

Bubbaloo, my ds had loads of ulcers when he was less than a year and I felt awful thinking that he was lacking vitamins & minerals in his diet, and that I was a really bad parent. But then GP told me that it was viral.
I just think it is unlikely for him to have a lot of ulcers unless there is an underlying cause....one or two, yes, but not lots.

reikizen · 17/07/2007 19:16

His toothpaste may be causing them you know. I think it is the SLS in it so see if you can buy some Kingfisher or similar from Health food shop and see if that helps. I get them if I use Macleans toothpaste!

Bubbaloo · 17/07/2007 19:56

Thanks everyone.
The pharmacist gave me some teething gel called Anbesol which I've just applied with great difficulty,so hopefully that'll numb the pain and he'll be back to his normal self in a couple of days.
I've also stocked up on banana's as according to dh the potassium is meant to help-don't know how true that is though.Very interesting about the toothpaste-I've always used the same one for him and it's the Milk Teeth one by Macleans.
Feedmenow-did your ds need antibiotics for his mouth ulcers or did they just go after a few days?

OP posts:
Feedmenow · 17/07/2007 20:06

Bubbaloo, as I recall he had to have antibiotics. I actually felt very relieved at the time cos at leats it meant i hadn't been negligent! Is your ds otherwise healthy? Worth keeping an eye on and seeing GP if it recurrs.
Hope he feels better soon!

Bubbaloo · 17/07/2007 22:39

Thanks.
Yes,he's well in himself and doesn't sit still for 5 minutes which although exhausting,is a good thing as he has plenty of energy.
He does however have no interest of food and hasn't done for a few months now which is a bit worrying-he's quite thin.
Think I'll wait til the end of the week and see how he is.If he's no better or still not eating much I'll take him to the doc's.

could have him checked for oral thrush - this can be really painful for little ones.

Bubbaloo · 17/07/2007 22:41

Ooh I didn't think of that.Does oral thrush look like ulcers?

OP posts:
maisym · 17/07/2007 22:46

white patches that can turn to ulcers if they are chewed on - iyswim.

Ask your doc to take a look & if it is thrush you'll get a cream to put in the mouth. Will take abbout a week to heal if I remember correctly.

best wishes.

Bubbaloo · 17/07/2007 22:48

Thanks for that.Haven't seen any white patches though, just lots of small horrid ulcers.
He woke up crying a while ago and had even spat his dummy out, bless him-must really be sore.

Hi b

Poor little chap.

Oral thrush doesnt look like ulcers.
Oral thrush is usually a white patchy type rash inside the mouth usually present on the tongue and inside the cheeks.

Ulcers usually 7 days to start improving. You can get these remedies to help sooth the discomfort that they bring but they wont heal them any faster unfortunately.

All you can do is keep putting on the topical (surface) anaesthetic untill it heals and maybe stay clear of giving him anythng citric that may cause it to hurt more.

Hope he is feeling better soon.

Bubbaloo · 17/07/2007 23:00

Thanks Peachypie-I'm pretty sure it's not thrush then.

Just to update:Have taken ds1 to the doc's this morning and he thinks he has the start of either hand foot and mouth or chicken pox.
He had a temperature of 38,have been told to give him Calpol and Neurofen and to take him back on Friday.
I just hope ds2 doesn't catch whatever it is as he's only 3 months old.

oh no
poor wee soul
i hope he feels better soon
my dds have both and hand foot and mouth and chickenpox, neither last too long (about 3 days at most) and they both lived on ice cubes
i remember dd1 poking her tongue out and asking me to kiss it better
get a supply of ice cubes in and make ice lollies

Bubbaloo · 18/07/2007 15:01

Ah thanks.
He went to bed at 12 and is still fast asleep. Not sure I'll be able to tempt him with lollies and ice cream though as he's such a fussy eater lately.
I've taken a couple of yogurts out the fridge and some rice pudding/fruit pots-hopefully he'll eat some of them, fingers crossed.
